Checking more than one box, all of them "wonderful"

A few months ago, I saw the museum exposition based on this book at the Japanese-American Museum in Los Angeles. I was so delighted and inspired by it that I very nearly bought the book immediately, but I figured, "Well, c'mon, how often am I going to look at it?" But I've been haunted by these photos -- in a nice way -- so I finally gave into temptation and bought myself a copy. You probably should indulge, too.

The book is, as the title implies, primarily photos of kids from mixed backgrounds. Each portrait includes the child's background, so you can see that Kieli is Chinese, Scottish and Irish. (You don't need to be told that she's a cutie.) The children are all under the age of 12; as the author said in the museum show, that is young enough that the children don't yet define themselves primarily in terms of race. For example, he asked each of them to write or draw answers to "Who are you?" and most said things like, "I like baseball" rather than "I'm Chinese."

The book would be worth it simply as a cool collection of kids' portraits, and as inspiration for anyone who wanted to see how to take better pictures of their kids. But where it transcends "interesting" and approaches "magical" is in the text that accompanies many of the photos, and in the essays at the beginning of the book. Many of the photos include the "who are you?" essay or drawing ("I play soccer. I am amazing."...) or notes written by one of the kids' parents, nearly all of which are upbeat ("....I have struggled for years to come to terms with my racial identity, but I don't believe my children will have that problem").

There's an engaging essay by the author, who pointed out that until the U.S. Census of 2000 he had to "choose one" when it came to identifying his race, and that such choices could make someone feel as though he's rejecting one of his parents. (Plenty of forms still have "check one," I've since noticed.) I was also inspired by the long forward by Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, the sister of President Obama, in which she wrote about the self-perceptions of those who grow up as mixed race. "The newly visible and active presence of mixed-race youth offers interesting opportunities for discussions about identity," she writes, and she explains the importance of "appreciation for complex identities and [the need to] thereby usher in a more truly inclusive understanding of 'diversity.'" The afterward by Cher is nice but it's only a page -- just one step above a book blurb.

This is a wonderful book, and it will cheer you up immensely. Recommended.

Nice to see a lot of different looks

I bought this book out of curiosity because my daughter is biracial. There are photos of children of many ages, sometimes with a little drawing or note from the child, sometimes with a note from the parent. These are all very positive, the parents talking about how great their kids are and how much they love them. Not a lot of commentary on difficulties kids may face... it's definitely a book with a 'we are all human' type of message, which is nice. Each photo also lists the 'mix' for each kid, which is interesting. I am not sure I believe all the claims, as some parents seemed to view having a mixed heritage as being like collecting Pokemon -- gotta have 'em all. Fun book, overall.

My daughter loves this book!

I just had to take the time to review this book, because my daughter (1 year 1/2 old) loves it and so do I. I had it on my wishlist for awhile and brought it a few months ago. Wish I had brought it sooner. Every night before bedtime we have to look at the book and she will give kisses to the babies pictures. Oh and she loves the baby on the back flap (the photographer's baby) - he should have put a bigger picture of his baby in there too, because she loves that baby. If you are thinking about buying this book - just go ahead and do it - I don't think you will be disappointed - we weren't.

Need to Read if in VC negotiations

I've read this book twice in the past year - excellent reference work that goes into the details of how to value a company and why valuations are often misunderstood or plain wrong. If in negotiations with a VC or when raising financing, this book is an absolute must. I'm an entrepreneur who has been "through the war" and this book has been extremely helpful for me. Being able to master the principles in this book will ensure that you are prepared to negotiate or position for better value.

One of the greatest values of the book was to read of the pitfalls (of which I've been part) that could easily be avoided by simple means - things that would have saved me $$ millions.

I think Christie could write anything. A story about multiple personalities, this was long time before the movie with Sally Feild. Or was this a story of possession. How far will a person go to cheat death. This is one story she left unsolved.

It's about seaplanes, a pretty girl, a vanished rock star, the curse of jet skis, a magic scepter, disrupters of paradise, and conch burgers. Joe Merchant, of the title, is the missing, presumed dead rock star whose sister Trevor Kane has returned to Florida to enlist her old lover Frank Bama to check out rumors of Merchant's survival. Trevor left Frank, a Vietnam vet who would rather fly than get serious, years ago because he seemed to love his ancient seaplane more than he loved her. Frank's doughty seaplane, however, is just what she needs to go in search of someone named Desdemona, who might be somewhere in the Caribbean. There is a Desdemona, and she does have a psychic link to the missing musician. She's been getting extrasensory messages for months. Also on the trail of Mr. Merchant and Desdemona are trash journalist Rudy Breno and one- armed, archvillainous soldier-of-fortune Colonel Cairo. Colonel Cairo is obsessed with the restoration of his missing arm, a task requiring a missing crystal. Desdemona might know something about that. The searches are Florida-intense, which is to say that there is plenty of time for subplots about Frank's chum who has been blowing up the jet skis that make paradise too noisy, and about a coldblooded killer with eyeballs tattooed on his eyelids who's not, after all, a subplot. So laid-back and rambling it's perilously close to sloppy, but Buffett's considerable charms as a performer and goof-off artist keep things afloat. Boring...

You read the description of this book and expect it to be a tropical thriller that would keep you on the end of your reading chair. Not true. I thought the book had good character development and a great concept, but a bad delivery. In my opinon, Jimmy Buffett did a poor job bringing everything together. This is one of those books where you'll read 3 pages and have no idea what you just read because you were totally thinking about something else. This is one of those books where you force yourself halfway through it, waiting for it to get better but it never does. I would have much rather been reading J.K. Rowling or Dan Brown while eating a cheeseburger in paradise.

An unconventional gift...with a fresh voice and something to say

When you think of a bonus, you think of something extra...a special treat or a gift for a job well done. The "bonus" in this story was definitely a treat for a job well done...a ruthless killer who is an expert at torture, finds himself attached to a naked, about to be raped and eventually killed young woman who begs for him to save her. Having just completed a big job for his brother who runs this group of vicious Mexican cartel members, Kyle is allowed to take the beautiful and damaged Chloe home with him as a reward for his work.
What happens between these two was downright sexy and steamy but also showed quite a remarkably tender process of Kyle "re-training" Chloe from being an abused slave for her evil boss to a strong and confident woman.
I liked the relaxed conversational way the author told her story...we hear what's happening through each of the two lovers POVs but we also get a bit of their inside jokes and sense of humor. While some might be annoyed by the constant pointing out of "puns", I got a kick out of it... the story was so dark and at times so violent (especially the torture scenes) that it needed those moments of levity and joking to break up the intense and scary situations.
A pretty interesting and different type of kidnap and role reversal book that would appeal to readers who like mafia/mobsters/kidnap/dubious consent and gritty, unconventional love stories.

In no way a typical love story...

I received this book in exchange for an honest review..

From the opening page I was hooked, this is in no way a typical love story it was dark and dangerous and held me completely captivated!

Chloe a messed up drug courier finds herself mixed up with a Mexican drug cartel where she expects to die horribly and most likely painfully, she decides to top herself before letting anyone else use and abuse her.
Kyle half brother to the cartel leader and there enforcer a brutal man that does what needs to be done no matter the consequences. Kyle takes a liking to Chloe, he steps in and claims her as his BONUS. Not a conventional pairing two very messed up people both with a harsh and dangerous history. Can they help each other and overcome the B/S from their pasts?

Now the story is very gritty contains graphic violence and scorching sex scenes but this doesn't detract from an amazing story that I could not put down. The author created wonderful characters and situations that left little to the imagination. I really enjoyed the added humour, puns included.....

If you enjoy a darker gritty crime/romance story then this is a book for you!

Dark, Heart felt love story

While this is a love story, it is a dark one and not for everyone. The story involves an abused drug courier, Chloe, and an enforcer with the Mexican Cartel, Kyle. Both characters have a tortured past but are still strong and caring. Their relationship builds over the course of the story and you realize at the end that they are perfect for each other.
This is a solid story with drama, action and violence with a good mixture of erotica and eventually love. The characters are interesting and well developed. Kyle is a violent, controlled Alpha male that you like instantly. Chloe is funny, tough and feisty with a very vulnerable side. Overall this was a great read and I look forward to her next book.

Excellent Book About Ascension

I have been going through ascension to higher consciousness for years now, and as a result of it, I have reached a point in which I have been blessed with the gift of Claircognizance (Information flows through to me automatically from an unknown source.), and along with this gift, I have also developed a strong ability to know whether information is correct or not by the information's energy vibration. The information in this book is very accurate. It resonates as being true.

What I found really interesting about this book is the fact that nobody on the path of ascension has seemed to know how we, the human race, will eventually end up on a version of the Earth that is in the 5th dimension (Will our current 3rd dimension bodies rise in vibration, will we be issued new 5th dimension bodies, etc.). This is the first book that I have read that clearly states that we will create new 5th dimension bodies.

This book also mentions that ascension is a new experimental procedure. I know through my gift of Claircognizance that this is true. The plans along the way have been changed many times from the original plans by those in the spirit world who are in charge of humanity's ascension.

It is wonderful the hear from this book that the New Earth in the 5th dimension will be "service to others oriented" rather than the way the 3rd dimension Earth is ("service to self oriented"). It is wonderful to hear that the competition, control, and manipulation that exists now will no longer exist.

The author describes in great detail some stages (ascension temples) that those on the path of ascension progress through. It is interesting to see exactly where one is in the process by reading about each of these temples that the author provides.

I especially was happy to see that the author mentioned The Violet Flame (Saint Germain's Violet Flame) as one of the ascension temples, and he encourages us to use it for healing. I have been using The Violet Flame for years, and it eventually led me to a permanent state of peace, love, joy, and bliss. I use it to cleanse my home and public places of dissonant energy, and I have used it to heal myself and others. I would also highly recommend using it as the author mentions.

I would highly recommend this book for those who are on the path of ascension and who want to learn more about it and for those who are not quite sure whether they are on the path of ascension. It offers a good explanation about why things are the way they are on the Earth now and what we can expect in the future. It also gives one hope for a better Earth.

All about ascension

If your favorite thing is ascension, you might really like this book. Be sure to look through the table of contents VERY carefully. In my opinion the book is a bit of a contradiction in that it was written by a former professor yet it has a scarcity of quotes, no footnotes, no chapter notes, and no index. Much of the content sourcing appears to be from web sites instead of books. There is, however, a ten page recommended reading list. This book is definitely not a channeled work and the author thanks over 150 people by name who have been faithful research assistants through the years.
I gave it three stars out of courtesy for all the author's hard work.
I question the author's power of discernment in his choice of channeled material, particularly in quoting a highly questionable unnamed channeled source which claims that way less than one percent of the population will move on to the New Earth in chapter one. Chapter one is where the bulk of information on the New Earth resides. Unlike an earlier reviewer, I do not think that any book on ascension I have ever read has been easy to read--they require great diligence. You may feel way differently.

This is an excellent book with very detailed information on ascending into the new earth while actually avoiding physical death.
The author also provides excellent insights on the current Spiritual Shift/Earth Changes, and why these thinga are occurring.
I give this book a big two thumbs up.

Lovely book

This is a beautiful little book, in so many ways. Beautiful looking, because Helen Caswell is an amazing artist. Beautifully and simply written by Helen Rayburn and easily understood by children. And most of all, a beautiful message: that no one need be afraid to talk to God, that anyone can talk to him. That he wants to hear from us.

I Can Talk With God

When I was younger, we lived with my grandparents and my Grandpa was a pastor. So my grandma always used to read us christian and prayer books. This is probably one of my favorite. In this book it talks about a little child connecting with God and understanding what it means to actually pray. It talks about how the child is thankfull for everything around him. It also talks about how when you ask God for something, you really have to listen for the answer because it is not always obvious what the answer is going to be. It says that the little voices in your head are the answers from God. I also liked this book, because it says that the child talks to God whenever he needs to and is not embarrassed about it. And it says that the child likes to talk to God the most before bedtime, and when i was a child, that was my favorite time to pray with my grandma also.

About the Author

Dr. Larry Turyn is a professor of mathematics and statistics at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he has taught for 31 years. He earned degrees from Brown University and the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. He has also been a Fellow and sessional instructor at the University of Calgary. At Wright State University he has developed several courses in engineering mathematics, differential equations, and applied analysis. Dr. Turyn has authored 26 articles in the fields of differential equations, eigenvalue problems, and applied mathematics.

There has got to be a better option out there

Absolutely terrible. This book tries to cover too much. It rushes through topics with few examples and vague theorems. The practice/HW problems rarely apply to the topics covered in the section.

Not only is the content flawed, but the book itself is poorly constructed. Mine had its spine start failing within a month, this is mostly due to the size of the book and it being absurdly thick. It should be split into at least 2 volumes that cover the material better.

This text is completely correct and very rigorous. It also easy to follow. For the persons who is trying to understand engineering mathematics, I strongly recommend this text. Odd numbers solutions in the internet are also very helpful to self study.

Terrible textbook

Really dislike this textbook. Not only is it 20 lbs, it is confusing and just incomprehensible. There are no solutions in the back. For my class I googled notes from other college adv math courses to learn the material.
