Great sociology with human insight (also saved my job)

I was working in a large bureacratic institution that was falsifying safety statistics. I was planning to expose the whole charade, and needed to know how in the most effective way possible.

After reading this and The Whistleblower's Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Doing What's Right and Protecting Yourself, I understood the most essential thing was anonymity, so that the supervisor couldn't fire you for performance. Even EEO complaints don't seem to deter these sorts of things. Lawsuits are often costly as well.

I anonymously released a report to the right people who had political connections. The issue got to C-SPAN. I retained my job until I found another one, no one the wiser for my having raised the issue.

The book itself is a tour de force of the kind of qualitative study that should be the norm. It looks for commonalities amongst "ethical resisters" and finds several - a strong religious or moral undercurrent and belief that went beyond normative and a family support system. It often explores these qualities using the research subjects own words, which makes the study all the more meaningful.

It also exposed the truth behind how organizations function to lessen the severity of adverse information about the organization. It looks critically at how organizations function in the wake of an ethical breakdown and what goes into making an ethical resister. The book is an enjoyable read free of the mindless academic jargon that often plagues these kinds of books.

Great introductory overview of an important subject

Extraordinary! Great introductory overview of a hard-to-manage subject matter. Gives a good sense of how invaluable whistleblowers are to the fundamental underpinings of democracy itself. The personal profiles will touch your heart. Regular people too often find their lives and careers turned upside down simply because they are honest enough to "commit the truth" after witnessing corruption in high levels of government or corporations. They are our last line of defense when those in power decide the rules need not apply to them. Authors did a good job selecting representative sample from among countless courageous whistleblowers to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude. From threats to our food supply to nuclear weapons scandals to health care fraud to corrupt politicians, etc., etc., whsitleblowers are the source of our learning about virtually every major scandal this country has seen. Shows how inadequate legal protections are for ehical dissenters. Must reading for anyone concerned about integrity and accountability in government and the corporate world.

Decent

Although this was a great book that quickly summarizes detailed and complex topics of organic chemistry; there is at a least one error that can really lead the reader astray. My example is the definition of aromatic compounds. The book states that cyclooctatetraene is an anti-aromatic compound. However, this is only true if cyclooctatetraene is planar. Unfortunately, cyclooctatetraene can shift out of plane thus making it non-aromatic. This little error isn't too bad but it can screw you over on a test. In summary, I believe this book is helpful in COMPLEMENTING your primary textbook.

Not very good

Not very impressed with this book. I'm taking organic 2 in the summer so I was excited that I would have this book to go along with the class. It is not as good as the first organic for dummies book. The author's don't use helpful analogies to help you remember things like the organic 1 for dummies author did. Some of the concepts are still very difficult to understand. I wish they "dumbed" it down a little more.

This is a 'bundled' review for three items:

'Organic Chemistry I For Dummies [Paperback]'
'Organic Chemistry I Workbook For Dummies'
'Organic Chemistry II For Dummies'

I read most of the ratings for these, and then purchased them for my daughter for her second semester organic chemistry, since the first semester was such a struggle for her. She says they are helpful, and she also uses them as a reference to get a perspective on a topic that is different than what the professor may have presented in class. I know it was a gamble when I purchased them if she would use them at all, so I was pleased that she does and so it was worth it!

Building race engines

This book is written by an accomplished racer and he has demonstrated a wealth of knowledge. He shares photos and facts that previously had been only myth's. Any person building a small block Mopar engine needs this book, stock or race versions, both can benefit from the information. Great photos and complete parts lists of engines, this book leaves no guessing. When I heard about it I ordered it that night, I'm happy I did and highly recommend it. Jeffco

big inch book

nice book - more detail required in my opinion. Practical project or build would have been nice wih step by step build process with a listing of exactly what parts, number, costs, suppliers etc .... just a suggestion, otherwise great book!

Build Big-inch Mopar Small Blocks

I have three engines I'm rebuilding. I have a 340 inch block that I'm boring out 40 thousands and installing a 4 inch stroked crank for what I think is 417 inch block.
I used this book to determine what rod and crankshaft bearings were needed and also the cam to give me the most torque in the RPM I will be using.

Stanislavski was basically an amateur...

David Mamet in his "Truth and Heresy" accuses the Stanislavski as being an amateur.. and essentially he was correct... despite that he set in motion a wide range of thinking about the "art" of acting.
This book maps what has taken place since Konstantin Stanislavski set in place the quest for "truth". A very useful and informative text covering 14 of the major movements in actor training from the twentieth century. This is a great distillation of the major elements of each aproach. Includes significant discussion of the practitioners and their contexts.
A great choice for anyone interested in the development of contemporary theatre. As a Drama teacher I find this a great resource for students.
This one graces my bookshelf it should also be on yours.

Twentieth century actor training is a fantastic book full of really helpful advice and strategies for upcoming teachers or drama enthusists. The book was in fantastic condition however it did take a long time to arrive. still a great buy and im very happy with it.

An Actor's Book of Eh

Not a bad book, I wouldn't read it again. This book looks into 14 acting styles that one actor will loose their mind trying to figure out which one is best for them. I personally sick with Miesner and Stanislavsky and I have done fine. The movements are different and unique and are not for everyone. It reads like an instruction manual and unless you have someone familiar with the movement good luck trying to decipher the text.

Very detailed, well-illustrated, complete (in all 3 volumes)

I bought this series of 3 books after seeing Deb Bennett on TV, literally while I was sitting in the living room of the dorm at horseshoeing school!

The author is a vertebrate paleontologist and natural-history researcher at the Smithsonian, according to the back cover, and contributes regularly to a variety of equine publications. I know that she initially impressed me as extremely authoritative, and the contents of this series bears that out.

I'm not quite sure why the publisher opted to put this material into a 3-book series, as the total is under 300 pages. I can say that the slim individual volumes are easy to pack and bring along, however.

The contents of the 3 books are:

Volume 1 (major chapter headings)
- What kind of animal is a horse?
- Balance and bascule
- The ring of muscles
- The body mosaic
- How to look at a horse
- In order to form a more perfect union

Volume 2 covers
- How to look at a horse's back
- How to look at a horse's neck
- How to look at a horse's forequarter

Volume 3
- How to look at a horse's hindquarter
- How to look at a horse's head
- Extremeties and the center

These headings barely hint at the rich detail included, however. Every conformation point, sub-point, major anatomical structure, etc. is illustrated with drawings and black-and-white photos. Faults are illustrated as well as good conformation. Multiple examples are shown for most. The combination of basic anatomy, conformation comments and instruction, and horse-to-horse comparisons and analysis yields very thorough instruction. Read through this series and I can assure you that you will have a very solid foundation for your own conformation analyses. You'll never quite look at a horse the same way again!

Buy all 3 - there's no point in buying the individual volumes. The other two are here Principles Of Conformation Analysis Volume I (Volume 1) and here Principles of Conformation Analysis Volume III.

Principals of Confirmational Analysis

This is a classic book written by a widely recognized horse expert who clearly knows her stuff. It is a recommended read for anyone serious about horses, but it is not an ideal first read. On the plus side, this book explains all of the key elements of confirmation with pictures. It also explains how form and function come together. On the minus side, this information is interspersed with other information that, while interesting, is not exactly on point. There are plenty of pictures, but they are just not clear enough for a beginner to see what the author is pointing out. As a result, it is very difficult to "see" the conformation angles that the author describes on real horses. As a person who is/was fairly clueless about conformation before reading the book, I found it to be too steep a learning curve to start with this book. As a result of reading this book, I am no longer "clueless." However, I do feel that I will need to also read a different book. It is worth noting that the author also gives seminars and clinics related to conformation which seem to be aimed at those who really wish to become experts.

Irene Flores: superb artist, superb art teacher

Irene Flores is an outstanding artist, and she's also a fine teacher. Whereas 99.9% of male cartoonists have no more understanding of clothing than I do--and that's likely because most of us don't care about the fashion industry or may actively despise it for a range of reasons, including its harmful labour practices and promotion of eating disorders--there's no question that drawing clothing as if it were an afterthought makes for boring and repetitive imagery. Film makers employ entire costume departments; since cartoonists are like indie filmmakers taken to the tiniest possible budget, we need to understand how clothing (not superhero outfits) affect characterization and mood of our stories. I've bought all three of Flores's books and will buy any other art instruction book she puts out. ministerfaust.com

Great for Learning to Draw Clothes

This book is really helpful because it talks about much more than bodies and poses. It includes all different styles of clothing for all ages, and even talks about the dynamic of wrinkles. I am also very glad that this book shys away from that awful Christopher Hart art style.

What I like about this book is that it give a great variety of clothing styles to use as examples. Even better than that, is that unlike many books that only depict one younger good looking body type , this has many ages from children to very old. it also has a variety of poses throughout the book. we have already used this book many times in our short ownership.

About the Author

Sandy Ryza is a data scientist at Cloudera and active contributor to the Apache Spark project. He recently led Spark development at Cloudera and now spends his time helping customers with a variety of analytic use cases on Spark. He is also a member of the Hadoop Project Management Committee.

Uri Laserson is a data scientist at Cloudera, where he focuses on Python in the Hadoop ecosystem. He also helps customers deploy Hadoop on a wide range of problems, focusing on life sciences and health care. Previously, Uri cofounded Good Start Genetics, a next generationdiagnostics company while working towards a PhD in biomedical engineering at MIT.

Sean Owen is Director of Data Science for EMEA at Cloudera. He has been a significant contributor to the Apache Mahout machine learning project since 2009, and authored its “Taste” recommender framework. He created the Oryx (formerly Myrrix) project for realtime large scale learning on Hadoop, built on lambda architecture principles, and has contributed to Spark and Spark’s MLlib project.

Josh Wills is Cloudera's Senior Director of Data Science, working with customers and engineers to develop Hadoop based solutions across a wide range of industries. He is the founder and VP of the Apache Crunch project for creating optimized MapReduce and Spark pipelines in Java.Prior to joining Cloudera, Josh worked at Google, where he worked on the ad auction system and then led the development of the analytics infrastructure used in Google+.

Great introduction to real world data science at scale

This book fills an important gap in large scale data science.
Spark has emerged as the big data platform of choice for data scientists both from the ease of use as well as the performance / optimization point of view. In a few lines of Scala code, Spark allows you to write iterative algorithms that scale out very well. For a data scientist who wants to explore large scale data sets, Spark is a great starting point (this is incredible progress in the Spark community given the project is just about 4 years old). However, Spark itself is moving fast and maturing with time, and Spark and Scala as well as distributed algorithms are typically not in the arsenal of many data scientists today.
What this book does is teach you how to think about data science problems at scale, in the context of Spark. By well chosen examples covering both supervised and unsupervised learning, the authors take you step by step from a practical problem definition (say how to recommend music given user's history of music listened to) to what features are relevant, what machine learning algorithm to use and how to tune parameters to optimize the solution and how you can use Spark to do all of this in an interactive / iterative manner. As a bonus, they also point you to well engineered data sets that you can use to follow along the discussion and learn by trying out the examples yourself.
By embracing the feature engineering steps and data cleaning/ error handling and tuning /feedback steps, the authors manage to show how real world data science works and how you can do full stack data science using Spark and gain immensely from the interactive nature of the Spark REPL.
Overall, I highly recommend this book, and though it is the first book on Data Science using Spark, it sets a high standard for subsequent efforts.

Advanced and Scala heavy

This is a solid book, with practical case study examples that one can follow. It really is an "advanced" book. One can learn quite a bit from this volume, but if you're a beginner you should start with something else. For beginners, I recommend Learning Spark (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SW0TY8O). I was disappointed with this advanced volume in that the authors focused almost exclusively on scala. This focus leads us down the path to unnecessary complexity in at least a few places. I would have liked to see more examples using Spark's pyspark library for Python.

If you are looking for a intro to data science, data analysis and machine learning at scale - this is the right book

TL;DR If you are looking for a intro to data science, data analysis and machine learning at scale - this is the right book. Sure, there are others, maybe more popular books from O'Reilly considering these topics, but the authors of those are using R and Python and the books are not focused on the performance and scalability. For closer details regarding Spark you can also take a look at this introductory Spark book - Learning Spark.

This book presents 9 case studies of data analysis applications in various domains. The topics are diverse and the authors always use real world datasets. Beside learning Spark and a data science you will also have the opportunity to gain insight about topics like taxi traffic in NYC, deforestation or neuroscience. Without any previous exposure or contact with machine learning readers might struggle to understand certain chapters, so I think it's good idea to actually try those examples yourself while reading and Google for further details about the used methods. Many of the chapters end only with basic models, which barely outperform the baselines, so if you want to, there is a lot of space for their improvement and further work.

Spark itself provides it's users with APIs in three languages - Java, Scala and Python. This books successfully covers each one of these, although you can feel slight preference of a Scala throughout the book. For Scala starters - they always explain some of the special constructs or syntax features which is in fact a nice thing. Introduction and Appendix chapters provides basic information about the Spark core, RDDs (Resilient distributed datasets) or options of running Spark - whether in cluster (Mesos, YARN, Spark's own) or standalone settings. Throughout the book you can find some really worthy tips about Spark or data analysis - like using other serializer than the Java's default (they recommend kryo), overview of data cleansing and whole machine learning pipeline. To sum up, I recommend this book to every data scientist - because it demonstrates advanced topics like workload distribution and scaling on an enjoyable examples.

Loved the book but need help!

I got the book and devoured it as I do all the craft/art books I buy. The reason I got this book though is because I wanted to start making my own jewelry from the inkjet shrink plastic. I have been doing this for about 2-3 months now but keep running into a problem that is driving me nuts!! I follow all the steps for doing the inkjet shrink plastic. But somewhere between baking and sealing I get all this lint on my piece. I've been using a spray acrylic. ANY TIPS WOULD BE HELPFUL, I'VE GOOGLED EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF AND DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO LOOK FOR AN ANSWER. Thank you for any direction!
