About the Author
Linda Hall spent the early years of her writing career as a journalist and freelance writer. She also worked in the field of adult literacy and wrote curriculum materials for adults reading at basic reading levels. In 1990 Linda decided to do something she’d always dreamed of doing, she began working on her first novel. The book she wrote, The Josiah Files was published in 1992. Since that time she’s written twenty-one more mystery and suspense novels and many short stories and essays. Most of her novels have something to do with the sea. Linda grew up in New Jersey and her love of the ocean was born there. When she was a little girl Linda remembers sitting on the shore and watching the waves and contemplating what was beyond. She could do that for hours. Linda has roots in two countries. In 1971, she married a Canadian who loves the water just as much as she does. They moved to Canada and have lived there ever since. One of the things they enjoy is sailing. In the summer they basically move aboard their 34’ sailboat, aptly named - Mystery. Both Linda’s husband Rik and Linda have achieved the rank of Senior Navigator, the highest rank possible in CPS. The U.S. sister organization is the U.S.P.S. Linda’s Senior Navigator diploma hangs proudly on her office wall. What this all means is that she knows how to use a sextant and can ‘theoretically’ find her way home by looking at the stars. Rik and Linda have two grown children, seven grandchildren and one very spoiled cat.

Not a Single Dull Moment

Having read and enjoyed the first book in this series, I eagerly awaited the release of the next book and immediately purchased a copy upon its release. This second story in the series did not disappoint. I really like, Em Ridge, the main character. Em Ridge is a boat captain who comes across as authentic and believable.

This mystery has plenty of twists and turns to delight even the most discerning mystery lover. The story begins in the Bermuda Triangle. After an abandoned sailboat is found, a mystery compounds upon another mystery, which begins to unfold about Em's uncle, a man Em adored, but apparently did not know as well as she previously thought in her younger years. When Em sets out to find out what happened to her missing uncle, she learns he and a female friend of Em's had a bit of a history neither had mentioned to her previously. What else was he hiding, a murder, stolen money?

This story is fast paced and held my attention from the first paragraph until the last sentence. I read the story in one day, basically, because I could not put it down for long.

I loved both books in this series, but The Bitter End was my favorite of the two stories. Probably because I felt like I already knew the main character from reading the first book. I am looking forward to reading more stories about this highly skilled and intelligent female boat captain, who is a survivor in the most dire circumstances.

I highly recommend The Bitter End and now eagerly look forward to the third book in this series. An excellent writing style and compelling stories make for enjoyable reads. This author has moved up to the top tier level of my favorite authors.

Quietly gripping and better than #1...

Emmeline (Em) Ridge is a female boat delivery captain. In other words, she’ll follow rich people around the oceans and deliver their sailing yachts to them because they want to get from point A to B faster. In the first book in this series, she had just lost her husband but still managed to solve a mystery. Fate gives her another blow by involving her in a new mystery related to an uncle’s disappearance. Here we go again. Ready for a fun ride? Sailing we will go.

Sequels are always suspect. First, there’s the question of whether the book can stand alone. This one does, and it does it very well. There’s enough back story to bring the reader quickly up-to-date. A few characters are the same—Em, of course, her cop friend, her old neighbors, and so forth, persons who are almost part of that Maine landscape, and the author does a good job of describing them anew without belaboring the point. A new protagonist, Em’s uncle Ferd (short for Ferdinand), is mostly absent except for back story, but he plays the important role of a potential victim. He’s also accused of murder, but maybe he’s really dead, and Em stubbornly pursues the case, even over the protests of her sage but conflicted cop friend.

Like the first book in the series, the characters here are complex, so much so that many can be considered persons of interest as Em struggles to prove her uncle’s innocence and discover whether he’s still alive. Because this is written in first person, the reader shares all her doubts and suspicions and will experience directly the clues as they are found. The author throws in enough misdirects to satisfy any reader of mysteries, though, confusing Em as well. (I was able to guess most of the story before long, but maybe I have an unfair advantage—I write mysteries too.) This book is probably better than the first, so that failure of some sequels is also avoided. In fact, it’s a first-rate mystery with great plot, characters, and settings.

The visit to the scene of the crime deep in the heart of Pennsylvania is a wee bit unusual. Em is most comfortable on a boat, while the people in the Pennsylvania town are mostly clueless about sailing. It’s almost like first contact between Terrans and ETs! (I’ve also experienced some of that in Pennsylvania, a microcosm of the U.S. with big cities Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and a lot of rural Americana in between.) Otherwise, most of the novel occurs on and around the ocean, from Bermuda to Maine. The meaning of the title is explained at the beginning of the novel—it’s a sailing term—but any lover of the sea and sailing will smile at Hall’s authentic portrayals of action on the water.

I was expecting more about the Bermuda Triangle. It really plays a minor role, although it provides a bit of strangeness at the beginning of the novel. That’s where Ferd disappears, and Em finds his empty boat with only his cat Bear on board. I also thought her temporary employer, the reality star and her reason for being there, would play more of a role, but he doesn’t. Count these things as misdirects too, I guess. The first adds eeriness; the second a bit of comedy (the reality show is about conspiracy theories).

Hall’s action scenes are good and add thrills to this mystery, which also has plenty of suspense. I would have spent more pages on the final confrontation with the killer, though. The earlier confrontation with his associate gets more attention. It seemed like the author was in a rush to finish. While many details aren’t learned until the end, reminding me of those old Agatha Christie tales where everyone gathers around and hears Miss Marple or Poirot explain what happened, the denouement doesn’t contain any cliffhangers. The next Em book will have to be a fresh story, always a good thing—I’m looking forward to it.

The Christie remembrance is fitting for another reason. Besides the importance of family, there really aren’t earth-shaking themes here. And the real lesson is that events many years in your past, even ones unknown to you, can come back and haunt you. So there’s a lot of old classical mystery flavor in this novel. It also leaves you thinking: what stories about your old relatives are true? All of the genealogical databases in the world would have trouble answering that question, so Em’s confusion about memories of her uncle not matching those of others in her circle of family and friends are probably not rare even in the real world. In this book, that only adds to the intrigue.

A Mystery Worth Reading!

Anything can happen in the Bermuda Triangle. When Em, a boat captain, accepts a job with “Papa” for twelve days, transporting him all over the area in her boat for a documentary, they come upon an abandoned sailboat with a tear in its mast and no one on board. After finding a cat on board, alone, and then realizing it’s her uncle’s boat, Em begins a desperate search for her favorite uncle. The trouble was, no one else was looking for him. The other relatives and friends thought she was crazy and even her mom didn’t really believe that he was missing. Most of them thought he was just in debt and ran away, implying to Em that she didn’t really know her Uncle Ferd. But Em wouldn’t give up. While searching, Em’s uncle is accused of murder and of stealing thousands of dollars. Along the way of looking for Uncle Ferd, Em came across two old girlfriends, a gun-toting muscle man who wouldn’t quit following and shooting at her, a few people who the police said were dead, an abused young wife, and [something I’ll keep secret].

I was literally stumped through the book until the end, and I can usually figure out a mystery puzzle fairly quickly. I loved trying to figure out the pieces of the puzzle as I read and tried to figure out the riddles. There was a lot of action too, without seeming too far-fetched. I liked that there was a hint of a “wanna be” romance: “I would need to be more careful in the future about where I placed my heart.” I could tell that the author loved being on the water and that made the story all the more credible.

The author has a knack for creating characters that are likeable and characters who I can care about. I was really cheering Em on and I felt like I really got to know Uncle Ferd how Em saw him. The Bitter End was a very entertaining story.

Matthew Brzezinski's Casino Moscow, Chystia Freeland's Sale of the Century: Russia's Wild Ride from Communism to Capitalism, and Paul Klebnikov's Godfather of the Kremlin: Boris Berezovsky and the Looting of Russia do a good job of documenting the chicanery. What shaped the character of the so-called oligarchs? How did the decaying Soviet system influence such a diverse group of men? Hoffman, former Moscow bureau chief for the Washington Post, digs into the background of the six main oligarchs e.g., Boris Berezovsky of the All Russian Automobile Alliance (AVVA), one of Vladimir Putin's main backers, and Anatoly Chubias, former chair of Gazprom and founder of NTV (Novoe Televidenie, or "New Television") identifying the events that made each of them so predatory and so influential. Several characteristics are common to each. They all lived restless lives. They began to take advantage of the decaying system by starting capitalist ventures called "co-ops." About the Author
David E. Hoffman is a contributing editor at the Washington Post. He covered the White House during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and was subsequently diplomatic correspondent and Jerusalem correspondent. From 1995 to 2001, he served as Moscow bureau chief, and later as foreign editor and assistant managing editor for foreign news. He is the author of The Dead Hand, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.

THE SIX MOST CUNNING AND RUTHLESS MEN IN THE WORLD

This book traces the rise and in some cases the demise of six of the most cunning and ruthless men the world has experienced in recent times. These men became known as the Russian Oligarchs. They carried out the biggest heist in history but not without the assistance of powerful western money interests and the proponents of laissez-fire capitalism such as some of the major international banks, Wall Street’s richest partnerships, the JP Morgan Bank, Goldman Sachs and well known capitalist adventurers such as George Soros.
The Oligarchs manipulated the new capitalist system that had been established upon the death throes of the centralised command economy in the Soviet Union. They ruthlessly accumulated massive wealth by grabbing Russia’s biggest factories, oil companies and mines.
The author has done a masterful job in revealing the rise of the Oligarchs who shrouded their activities in secrecy as they plundered the Russian estate. The Oligarchs were regarded as the sons of Yeltsin’s unruly capitalism. Yeltsin was a proponent of economic shock therapy with the aim of totally destroying Soviet Communism. He set out to put the enormous industrial wealth of the country into private hands. The Oligarchs utilised Yeltsin’s ambitions to their own enormous advantage. They became members of Yeltsin’s inner circle and manipulated by all available means the massive fire sale of Russia’s state assets to their own advantage. The Oligarchs bankrolled the seriously ill Yeltsin’s election campaign to ensure his hold on power during his dying days in power. They controlled the media and were able to manipulate Yeltsin’s public appearances to disguise his state of health. But at his end Yeltsin had to concede that privatisation had been exploited by the rapacious Oligarchs. Too late, he asked in his farewell speech for the forgiveness of the Russian people.
The Oligarchs were instrumental in Putin’s rise from obscurity as a means for their own advancement through the continued exploitation of the privatised state assets. To achieve their declared objective of maintaining the continuity of power after Yeltsin the Oligarchs found their preferred successor in Putin and manipulated his election to power. Putin was destined to clash with the Oligarchs because his personal ideology retained many aspects of the old soviet approach to power. Putin believed that everything had to be governed from above and it was therefore necessary for him to concentrate power, to control the mass media and to rule business. Inevitably Putin soon fell out with the key Oligarchs which meant that the days of glory for the Oligarchs were rapidly drawing to a close. New players were coming, new fortunes were being made and a new Russian leader sat in the Kremlin.
Putin had thwarted and betrayed the Oligarchs. He said to the Oligarchs- you were the ones who asked me to be president so how can you complain? The Oligarchs had no answer. Their days of prominence had ended.
But large parts of the huge fortunes the Oligarchs and their cohorts had amassed had been salted away to safe havens around the world. Their fall from grace in Russia would curtail their activities in their homeland but would not drastically impact on their wealthy lifestyles. Putin exacted punishment on those of the Oligarchs who resisted him and most are now exiled from Russia and have slipped entirely from public view.

A Must Read to Understand How Russia Collapsed

This is the most comprehensive explanation of how the Russian economy transformed itself from primarily state owned to largely privately owned during the Gorbachev and Yeltsen eras. The reader will find how these Oligarchs were able to acquire state owned industry for pennies on the dollar when no one would have thought it was possible. It is a story not generally understood by most Americans but is essential to understanding the subsequent Putin control of government. Extremely well written and rich in detail, I found Hoffman's writing style admirable. I only wish he would do a second book starting with Putin.

A different kind of book, focusing upon the rise of post-Soviet RussiaThis book

This book focuses very detailed information, time and effort into tracking the oligarchs that with colossal luck and courage , rise to incredible wealth by being in the right place at the right time with the right connections. Just when the author focuses too much detail on a person he has the ability to show the "big picture" again. This is 500 pages of serious reading but I really liked how he tied it into the rise of Putin at the end. It is a quality book worth 4 stars although I would not classify it as a likable book. In the end I learned a lot about the new Russia and therefore it was worth the time and money.

This was a required taxtbook for a class. For a textbook, it was great. Good examples. great questions and activities and the end. Would have liked a little more "meat." It gave a great overview of Sociolinguistics, but didn't go very deep into some areas.

A great place to start for sociolinguistics

A professor loaned this to me for the paper I was writing in sociolinguistics in a grad class. This book was invaluable in a subject I had no background in--it was not in depth enough to write the paper I needed, but it defined terms and gave me a base to work with that other texts just assumed I would know. I could not have jumped into Wolfram, Labov, etc., without this book.

It is a great reference/starting book, and each chapter gives you a list of books and articles for further research on the topic of that chapter since the chapters are admittedly brief. For example, the chapter on sociolinguistics and education was right up my alley, and Van Herk's suggested further readings were extremely useful and led me to all kinds of great info.

Sociolinguistics is an excellent branch of studies for Language Arts teachers. I think this is a good starting place for you if you're coming to this from that point of view. Students who struggle in language will continue to do so without correct interventions and Van Herk points in the direction to all kinds of research that has been done to help students who speak in a variety of ways (and why they might speaks that way, how that could be approached); the research is there to try in the classrooms.

What I think of this book

This book was required for a grad level class. I have not read it in it's entirety yet. It seems to be a well organized text. The author seems very practical and the text seems approachable. I'm hoping that the professor is as approachable as this text!!
