Excellent tutorial book for piano comping

Author Jeb Patton starts by saying "This is the book I searched for when i first started playing jazz". I decided to take comping seriously and I am so glad such a book exists.

The book contents are:

Chapter 1 covers rhythms, grooves bass lines and blues
Chapter 2 covers shell voicing, guide tones, re-harms of a 12 bar blues
Chapter 3 closed position chords, trombone voicing, ii-V-I and rhythm changes
Chapter 4 bebop, horizontal and vertical motion
Chapter 5 covers spread voicing, rootless voicings and solo arrangements for standards

It also comes with 2 cds with examples and backing tracks. The backing tracks are part of the practice exercises. Once a section is completed the author suggests to try out the exercises while playing on a backing. First listen to the professional comping and then try to make your own.

Overall the book encourages to play and practice - internalising progressions and comping style and rhythms. It's not just a bunch of cold exercises, it's more like a manual that start slowly and take you all the way.

Explanations and material are all 5 stars. I'm looking forward for the next volume to be released.

Good but Not as Good as Mantooth

Patton shows you a lot of useful stuff however, and if you're a teacher looking for different ideas to pass along to students, this is probably a must read. Good attention to rhythm, less to harmony. Why only four stars? Because the actual comping instruction -- from a harmony perspective -- is just not up to the same standard as Frank Mantooth.

This book and its promised sequel will surely become the go-to books for modern jazz comping for the foreseeable future. The material is rooted in genuine repertoire, and this first volume should serve to clarify the language of bebop comping (which is far more than just the mechanical application of "shell" voicings) not just for pianists but for all jazz musicians. A great book!

Find out the real story of how and why Iraq came to be as it is.

This is a deeply detailed and informative book. I read this because I wanted to know how Iraq came to be--now that it is on the verge of partition. And now I know.The various chapters overlap somewhat (these originally were a series of papers presented at a conference). But that is a small point. For example, folks often say the Sykes-Picot agreement, made between the British and the French during WW I, defined modern Iraq, and I always believed that. But from this book I learned that was not true. The agreement was renegotiated to give the Kurdish north to the British (which was north of agreed-up line dividing the two countries spheres of influence) because the Brits wanted the oil for their navy. This was in return for a British agreement to allow the French direct rule in Lebanon! Indeed that oil was the real reason the Kurds never got their independent state.
