Charles E. Begley, PhD, is professor of management, policy, and community health at the University of Texas School of Public Health, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he has taught since 1984. He is co-director of the Center for Health Services Research, director of the Houston Health Services Research Collaborative, and an adjunct faculty member of economics at Rice University. David R. Lairson, PhD, is professor of health economics and co-director of the Center for Health Services Research at the University of Texas School of Public Health, and a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Economics at Rice University. Robert O. Morgan, PhD, is professor of management, policy, and community health at the School of Public Health, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and is an adjunct faculty member at Baylor College of Medicine in the Health Services Research Section of the Department of Medicine. Paul J. Rowan, PhD, MPH, is an assistant professor of management and policy sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Rajesh Balkrishnan, PhD, is associate professor of management and policy sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Very useful

Purchased the book to perform research and literature review of public health issues. Text provided a strong platform to do so. It was also not the worst text I've had to read for class.

Genre within a genre times four

"Death World" by Steve Lyons is situated at the crossroads of four genres--(1) it is a military science fiction like Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers," Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War," and Gordon Dickinson's "Dorsai;" (2) it is a "deathworld" novel reminiscent of Harry Harrison's Deathworld series; (3) it is the story of a single squad in combat like "Platoon" and "Sands of Iwo Jima;" and (4) it is a horror novel like "Alien" and "Predator."

Irrespective of the genre echoes reverberating throughout the text, it remains true to Warhammer 40K. The usual 40k tropes abound: The troops go to war in the Gothic battle-barges of the Empire. They deal with the inept and sometimes corrupt Imperium commanders. Horror exists at every turn--from the dangers of the corrupting warp to the attack of zombies in the night. Consequently, the novel appeals to both gamers and science fiction fans.

In summary, the novel concerns a squad of Catachan jungle fighters sent into the jungle of Rogar III to assassinate an Ork Boss. The Empire and the Orks are mining Rogar III; however, over the last few months the planet inexplicably has begun to mutate into a death world.

In the Warhammer universe a death world is one that for whatever reason is inhabitable by man.

We learn that Rogar III world is sentient and does not want either the Imperial troops or the Orks on its surface. To rid itself of the invasions, it engineers its nature to become toxic to both humans and Orks.

The beauty of "Death World" lies in the deft way in which Steve Lyons presents the story. He introduces the squad in a straight-forward, no-nonsense way; he focuses on the protagonist--Lorenzo--;and he develops all his characters naturally through the narrative. He preserves the unities and abides by the conventions of his genre.

The story reminded me of some of the movies I loved as a kid--"Operation Burma," "A Walk in the Sun," "Battleground."

If you like "Death World," I also recommend Lucien Soulban's "Desert Raiders," Harry Harrison's "Deathworld," and Dan Abnett's "Double Eagle."

Death of a Worldly idea...

Death World had all the makings and concepts of what could have been a fun and exciting sci-fi romping adventure.

But alas, that was not to be. Very quickly this reader was bored with the lack of details this writer exuded very quickly. The weapons and very survival aspects of keeping alive in such an environment was literally ignored. That made this novel soon become humdrum in what wa ssupposed to be high-octane action/adventure reading.

But without cohesive characterizations, as well as solid soldier survival tactics, unfortunately this novel quickly took a nose dive for me.

When it comes to solid writing in this Warhammer genre, you need to look for better writers such as Dan Abnett, Ben Counter and Graham McNeil. Right now, they are the top three dogs.

First time reading a 40k novel

Being my first 40k novel I actually liked it. It had lots of action and some small minor plot twists involved. I don't play Warhammer 40k so some of the terms in the book were pretty new but I eventually figured out what they were. For example, I don't know exactly what constitutes a death world and it was never really explained in the book. It must figure that you know what makes up a death world in the first place.

Although there is a 'prologue' on page 5, it is extremely short, being only one page and all it does is describe the Emperor and his intentions with the galaxy. Too short for me because I would of liked to read more about it.

But I was mainly in it for the action and it started off with it right away. They were not to fancy with the technology so I was able to keep up with everything.

As far as style goes, I would say it was about average compared to some other books I've read such as "A Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin who is excellent. So, I really have no complaints there.

A few other details in the book as far as environmental surroundings were not fully explained so I pretty much had to picture it all myself by making it up so that was no biggie either.

Overall I'd have to say that Warhammer 40k players will enjoy this and as far as an introductory novel, newbies like me would enjoy it too although we'd most like have to look up a few words to get what they are.

Is there anything less than 1 star?

This is truly an execrable book, and Barron's should be ashamed to have published it. Not only is it poorly written and misleading in some of its conclusions, it is riddled with factual errors. Some of these errors may be blamed on the confusing charts (ex: the chart on page 22 seems to indicate that the Hopi and Navajo lived in New England while the Chinook inhabited Texas and the Pequot, Mohegan, and Naragansett hung out in Florida), while others are relatively minor (ex: page 44, the lawyer in the John Peter Zenger trial was Andrew Hamilton, not Alexander Hamilton).

Other "errors" can be described more accurately as "glaring misunderstandings and lapses of historical fact." My favorite of these occurs on pages 120 and 121, when the author goes on at length about how John Brown's experiences "as a slave" led him to organize the attack on the federal armory at Harper's Ferry. There is a little box with a quote from the memoirs of a Georgia slave named John Brown talking about the harsh conditions of his life before his escape. This is immediately followed by this paragraph:

"John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry proved to be a catlyst for war. He was arrested, tried and hanged. When you look at the diary entry, you will see the agony that Brown went through as a slave. It is not surprising that when he escaped, he decided to lead the attack. You must take this suffering into account in deciding what you would have done if you were John Brown."

Of course, John Brown was not a slave. He was a white abolitionist/violent revolutionary. Amazingly enough, there must have been more than one person named John Brown living in America in the 1850s!

It really is amazing to me that Barron's, which I have generally found to be a reputable company, would let such a book carry the Barron's name into the market. I have the 1999 edition, and it is my fervent hope that there are no subsequent editions. If there are, I hope that someone has gotten around to editing the thing.

The only way I could possibly recommend this book is if it were to a bored history teacher who wanted to exercise his or her red pen a little.

Useful guide, great for an outline, useful for test prep

We have the 2009 version and while I wouldn't even suggest one book could cover all of American history, this one does a nice job of giving you an outline of the basic facts without all the excessive drone of some textbooks --those that go on and on. This book is also worthwhile for most homeschoolers as well as advanced students prepping for an early college exam (CLEP or AP) and would be useful for college kids to use to bone up on just the facts. Is it everything? Of course not, but it does give you an outline to follow and a nicely designed framework to guide you. Common sense in education and learning shows that by using this as a guide, you can easily look for deeper information on the enormous amount of educational websites available--to explore any historical topic. a terrific read

This is one book I just can't put down. I fell into the Banshees quite by accident in 1984, having discovered them via their connections to the Cure's Robert Smith. Hyaena was my first purchase, and although I felt like something of a "Johnny-Come Lately" fan I have followed them ever since. This great book tells the warts and all story of the band, from their chaotic, what-a-shambles beginings through their many trials and tribulations, to their ultimate break-up and unfortunate reunion. For fans this is a MUST. If, like me, you have always assumed that Sioux's last name is Dallion, as is it spelled in many alternative rock source guide books, then you will learn that it's actually Ballion. And that's just the begining.

Didn't Totally Love it

I have loved Siouxsie and the Banshees since discovering them in high school, so of course I was eager to read this book when I heard it was coming out. After reading it, I have to say that it wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would be. The reason for my discontent lies in the fact that, maybe unlike a lot of fans, I am less interested in reading about the making of the music, i.e. the mechanics of the songwriting, which instruments they used, which producers, etc, than I am in reading about their lives as people, their personalities, their likes and dislikes, their personal lives, what drove them to become who they are, stuff like that. This book contained a little of that in the early chapters discussing the Banshees' biographical information and a little later on, but most of the rest of the book contained lots and lots of info on stuff that I found I didn't really care about. It is not that I am completely disinterested in the nuts and bolts of the music, all the moving around, and all the shows they played, but I found that after I finished the book (and I had to push myself to keep reading as I regularly found myself lost in trying to remember which producer was which and so on), I felt that I didn't really "know" Siouxsie any better than I did at the beginning. To me, she has always represented the ultimate punk ice queen, visually stunning yet unapproachable, unattainable, and, yes, cold. Even as a fan, I always felt that she was someone that I could not really relate to although I thought her musical output was genius and I admired her. I was hoping this book would change my mind about that and paint a more complete picture of who she is, but it didn't really (basically, I'm saying that I always hoped that she would turn out to be more than the super haughty b@#$% she always made sure we believed she was). I wanted more about her, less about the band, and I didn't care for the "oral history" writing style with the snippets from interviews pasted together. The pictures also left a lot to be desired.

Hard to put down - If you're a Siouxsie fan - GET THIS BOOK

I bought this book and couldn't put it down! This is one of the best books out there about Siouxsie and the Banshees! These are interviews with Siouxsie along with members of the band and other important figures. They (Siouxsie and others) tell the stories about the band's history, the songs/albums, etc. If you're a Siouxsie fan - you have to get this book! Another good book for a Siouxsie fan (and its hard to get) is Ray Stevenson's Siouxsie and the Banshees Photo Book. Get this book and the Photo book!

EXCELLENT!

I can't say enough good things about MFW 1st grade!

I used it with my K and 1st grader last year and we loved the full bible based approach!

This is a very gentle curriculum and teacher friendly.

We loved the timeline and it gave my boys a real solid overview of the bible.

I didn't do MFW K. I would suggest going through "Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" the year before this. That book prepared my son for the reading he would have in this curriculum.

There is a lot of drawing, which my boys loved!

And again this is VERY teacher friendly!

I love, LOVE this curriculum BUT you can no longer purchase any of the the Student Sheets or the Phonics workbook that this teacher's manual uses as they are no longer in print. The ONLY thing this is good for is to trade it in with the company for a fee of $45 plus shipping to upgrade to the 2nd edition TM which you can purchase the consumable student sheets and workbook.

Excellent for Beginners and Professionals Alike

As part of a mentoring program, I was once asked to coach and supervise someone who was about to give his first major presentation in front of his peers and key decision makers. He dismissed all the advice that he was given and said, rather breezily, that he had a strong background in amateur dramatics, so he knew exactly how to deliver a speech. The outcome was predictable but still sad. He knew all about how to project his voice and how to achieve rapport and get a quick laugh, but that was about it.

People who know nothing about professional speaking assume that it's easy. When somebody once asked me my fee for a speech, I saw the eyebrows shoot upwards: "For an hour's work????" I was asked.

"No," I responded, "For thousands of hours of research, preparation and practice." Any professional speaker would say the same. It is no different from a professional musician, dancer or comedian.

If Alan Weiss's book had been available back then, I would have asked my mentoree to read it.

It is precise, specific and also lays out the big picture. So often books like this are full of self-congratulation, but this one really does deliver.

No book in the world will do everything for you. But if you really do want to be a speaker and you have something to say which will enrich your audience: read this book; take action on its contents; contact other professionals in your area, or organizations like the National Speaker's Association and then take massive action to get started!

Best information on 'speaking career strategy' I have read

First of all, the production quality of this book is crap. The thing was falling apart the first time I opened it. I dont like having to be careful with a book like this, particularly one I want to mark up, highlight, go back to time and time again.

Now then, we are getting to the point of the book in the first place. I wouldn't care if this thing was in cuneiform pressed into wet clay tablets. There is more practical and useful information in this book on how to strategically set up your speaking career than I have seen in any of the dozen or so other books that I have read. You could literally take the advice in this book - and virtually nothing else - and plan out your speaking career for the next ten years.

The author's practical trashing on some of the 'rules of thumb' of the game (e.g., raising fees) are not mere opinions: this guy has lived this and has the income history to back up his claims.

Some of the references are outdated (the book is nearly 10 years old as of my writing) so you have to get passed that. The info on how to establish yourself as an expert through writing books and creating other income streams through developing info products is sound but has been superseded by far more complete and recent writings (Stephanie Chandler's book "From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur" is a great reference for that).

The exercises on 2 PAGES (35 and 46) alone made reading this worthwhile.

The focus on offering value is the key. This is what I focus on in my own coaching and speaking and, for that matter, what I spend a lot of time teaching to my clients.

Breaks the old rules

If you have read "Speak and Grow Rich" or similar books, then you will very much enjoy this refreshing take on the speaking industry. The author breaks down all of the old speaking industry myths and affirms that anyone can make it in the speaking business. Old industry axioms such as "raise your fees when demand exceeds supply" and "specialize in a few areas of speaking" are blasted by the author's advice to raise fees when the value you offer to the customer increases, and to offer clients as many services as you are comfortable providing (e.g. wide range of topics as well as delivery formats (keynotes, training, etc.)).

This book is VERY customer-centric; that is, the author looks at speaking/training/workshops as a catalyst for evoking change (e.g. improved communication, increased sales) and believes they should produce tangible results that last long after the speaker has left the client site. This is far different from the tone of other books which seem to indicate that speaking is an ego-centric medium and that platform skills are more important than value delivered.

In short, the author speaks volumes on delivering real, measurable value, in both speaking, writing (articles, books, etc.) and any products you develop and sell. He furvently denounces egomaniacal motivations and condones making the absolute best effort to provide buyer/client satisfaction.

Other topics the author touches on: business insurance, incorporating your business, speaker's bureaus (why they need you, not the other way around), and marketing strategies (this is lightly touched upon).

Be forewarned that the author writes about catering to business clients rather than to individual consumers, so you will not find information regarding developing and marketing consumer centric seminars (although he does touch (very) briefly on the college and private seminar market). If this is what you are looking for, may I recommend a book by Robert W. Bly or by Paul Karasik.

This is a wonderful book that will likely leave you with a "it's not as hard as the other books said" feeling. My recommendation is that you read "Speak and Grow Rich" by the Walters duo first (it's got excellent information about every aspect of the business, despite its shameless self-promotion) then go on to reading Weiss' superb work.
