Review

The use of documents and images are the most compelling features of Out of Many, TLC … The use of these also reflects current pedagogical trends emphasizing visual learning or tools and uses of primary sources.

-Jeff Crane, Sam Houston State University

The book has a nice, easy-to-read narrative style that is supplemented well with images and useful “extra” features such as American Communities. It is a very good text.

 -Julie Courtwright, Texas A&M University

…visually appealing and engaging to the students.

-Robert B. Bruce, Sam Houston State University

The broad-ranging, multicultural, multiethnic focus is this book’s greatest strength. This is what sets it apart from most other textbooks.

-Brian D. Behnken, Texas A&M University

The single most compelling attribute of Out of Many, TLC is its smooth comprehensiveness. It is thorough without being overly simplified. Out of Many, TLC is user-friendly and very approachable for students.

-Michael K. Ward, California State University-Northridge

Good summary information

Nothing can replace a good instructor to illuminate a topic, but this text provides a good basic summary of US History. It is well-paced and sensibly arranged. It held my attention for the hours of reading required.

i dont often give digital purchases a one star. this particular one is getting one because it is simply incompatible with all forms of technology that i own. i am an individual who has sustained significant vision loss due to a combat related injury. this book is not compatible with the kindle 3g keyboard, the kindle paper white, or even my windows 10 laptop. thus the only medium in which i could read this was my Iphone 6 plus. not really an option. please either format your books to work with an actual kindle or at least patch them to work with windows 10 as they dont even work with windows 8 yet.

The Burn Journals, by Brent Runyon

I don’t want to get out of bed.I’m so stupid.I did so many things wrong.I don’t know what to do.I’m going to be in so much trouble. What am I going to do?I’m completely screwed. In 1991, fourteen-year-old Brent Runyon came home from school, doused his bathrobe in gasoline, put it on, and lit a match. He suffered third-degree burns over 85% of his body and spent the next year recovering in hospitals and rehab facilities. During that year of physical recovery, Runyon began to question what he’d done, undertaking the complicated journey from near-death back to high school, and from suicide back to the emotional mainstream of life.In the tradition of Running with Scissors and Girl, Interrupted, The Burn Journals is a truly remarkable book about teenage despair and recovery.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 8-12. On the sixteenth page of this incisive memoir, eighth-grader Brent Runyon drenches his bathrobe with gasoline and ("Should I do it? Yes.") sets himself on fire. The burns cover 85 percent of his body and require six months of painful skin grafts and equally invasive mental-health rehabilitation. From the beginning, readers are immersed in the mind of 14-year-old Brent as he struggles to heal body and mind, his experiences given devastating immediacy in a first-person, present-tense voice that judders from uncensored teenage attitude and poignant anxiety (he worries about getting hard-ons during physical therapy) to little-boy sweetness. And throughout is anguish over his suicide attempt and its impact on his family: "I have this guilt feeling all over me, like oil on one of those birds in Alaska." Runyon has, perhaps, written the defining book of a new genre, one that gazes as unflinchingly at boys on the emotional edge as Zibby O'Neal's The Language of Goldfish (1980) and Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak (1999) do at girls. Some excruciatingly painful moments notwithstanding, this can and should be read by young adults, as much for its literary merit as for its authentic perspective on what it means to attempt suicide, and, despite the resulting scars, be unable to remember why. Review
“[The Burn Journals] describes a particular kind of youthful male desolation better than it has ever been described before, by anyone.” -Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon

“A fascinating account of the mending of a body and mind, told with the simple and honest sensibility of someone too young to have endured so much.” —Arthur Golden, author of Memoirs of a Geisha

"Runyon has, perhaps, written the defining book of a new genre, one that gazes...unflinchingly at boys on the emotional edge ." -Booklist (starred review)

"A taut, chilling account of the author's attempt to commit suicide...a must-read for teenagers struggling with self-doubt."-The Denver Post

“An excruciating, brilliant book...WOW.” —A.M. Homes, author of Things You Should Know

From the Inside Flap
BRENT RUNYON WAS 14 years old when he set himself on fire.
This is a true story.
In "The Burn Journals, Runyon describes that devastating suicide attempt and his recovery over the following year. He takes us into the Burn Unit in a children's hospital and through painful burn care and skin-grafting procedures. Then to a rehabilitation hospital, for intensive physical, occupational, and psychological therapy. And then finally back home, to the frightening prospect of entering high school.
But more importantly, Runyon takes us into his own mind. He shares his thoughts and hopes and fears with such unflinching honesty that we understand--with a terrible clarity--what it means to want to kill yourself and how it feels to struggle back toward normality.
Intense, exposed, insightful, "The Burn Journals is a deeply personal story with universal reach. It is impossible to look away. Impossible to remain unmoved.
This truly riveting memoir is a spectacular debut for a talented new writer.

"From the Hardcover edition.

Good book for its subject matter.
By Arnold Torres
My name is Corina and I am 14 years old. I just finished this book for some summer reading and here is my review. I feel that “The Burn Journals” does appeal to its audience (teenagers). The book may touch on some subjects that are considered inappropriate, but mature readers will understand what the book is really about.

I consider the reading level for this book to be easy. There aren’t many “big” words in this book, and it’s fairly easy to understand. It’s easy to understand since the book was written from the perspective of a teenager. I’m 14 and read at a 12th grade level, so those who read at a lower level may not find it as easy to understand as those who read at a high level.

I think that the author’s purpose for writing this book was for him to say that life is precious. The book was his way of telling people not to harm themselves. He wanted for people to know his story so that they wouldn’t follow his mistake. The author wanted people to understand what he and his loved ones went through because he hurt himself.

I believe this book is written for teens around the ages of 13 through 18. It would appeal to a mature group of teenagers since the subject matter in this book is serious, but the author does add some humor to lessen the subject matter. It takes a certain level of maturity for the reader to enjoy and understand this book.

As a caveat for readers, this book contains swear words, religious expressions, self-harm, suicide, and some sexual content. Multiple times in the book there are parts that discuss and contain this material.

I gave this book four star because of how detailed it was. I would have given it five if it weren’t so repetitive. I did however like how the author added some humor in such a serious topic. The book may have had vulgar parts in it, but I enjoyed the story.

Review assignment
By Carrie
In the novel “The Burn Journals” by Brent Runyon, the characters include himself, Brent Runyon, his mom and dad and the doctors. Brent holds in most of his emotions and doesn’t talk to anyone. The internal conflict is that Brent keeps to himself a lot and has a hard time talking about his feelings with other people. The external conflict is that Brent doesn’t let close friends or even his parents know what he is feeling. While Brent is in the hospital his parent’s cone visit him. In the hospital he realizes that the doctors and his parents are only there to help him. The two important plot events that makeup the rising action is Brent committing to taking his life. Another action was Brent lighting his friends shirt on fire and was about to get expelled if the teachers found out. This is one of the reasons he committed to killing himself.

Some things I liked about the book were how far he had come and never giving upon his recovery. Even though he wanted to give up his life, he didn’t and realized, “why did I do that?” One part of the book that I liked was when Brent was finally able to goon date with Tina (one of the nurses he really liked.) Another part was when Brent was at Children’s and he was getting all those letters from his friends. The last part that I liked was Brent go to get his hair cut and it hasn’t been cut in a really long time. I like all these parts because it shows even though you’re in the hospital you can still do things that and average person does. I recommend this book because in the beginning Brent wanted to kill himself he was very dark and told no one how he was feeling and by the end he survived and now he is alive and is now doing great things. This book is very inspiring to any age and some teens could relate to Brent and how to deal with depression.

Different and good
By Amazon Customer
This is one of those books I picked up because it sounded interesting and it was different than what I normally read for recreational reading, and I really enjoyed it. It's a different writing style and I normally don't get super interested in creative non-fiction, but I think this was really well done. I like how it addresses very serious issues without flinching away from the hard realities of those issues.

This is however definitely not a girl book. This is more of a guy book. Brent thinks about things that girls don't usually think about and to many girls it can be disturbing or just flat out annoying. So I would recommend this book to a teenage boy 15 years and older. I'm not saying girls won't enjoy it, because I did. I'm just saying it's more of a boy book. It might also be a hard book to read if you've dealt with a lot of suicidal issues throughout your life.

Language; Oooooooh yes. Teen boy. Makes sense.
Sex; He thinks an awful lot about it, but no.
Drugs; a little bit towards the end, but not seriously.
Violence; Well he sets himself on fire.....

Access card????
By Kelly
I bought this book brand new because it is supposed to have an access card to the online labs inside it. There is no card inside and the online labs are VERY crucial to the class. I will have to send the book back and get a new one and I only have a matter of a couple days before my class starts.

probably the best modern geometry book available
By null_space
Edit: I noticed that there are third-party sellers on Amazon charging ridiculous prices (in excess of $500) for this book. Buy it on AoPS' website instead.

The Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) curriculum is absolutely revolutionary in my eyes. What differentiates this book from the others is the fact that nothing is spoon-fed to you. This book uses a radically different approach: Problems first, then explanations. Major results are broken down piece-by-piece and discovered through the problems in the beginning of each section. Of course, although it is recommended to try the problems first, it is not necessary as the solutions are revealed on the following pages. These problems serve as the lesson AND the examples, and they have traditionally served better to familiarize students with the main concepts than most other methods. The exposition is fully rigorous and motivated, with an emphasis on WHY the results exist and how they relate to each other. Nothing is cluttered or disorganized, and there are no stupid pictures or horrendous colors taking up all the space. Then, the section ends with 3-8 exercises. This may seem like too few, but I will touch on that in a moment.

Another aspect of the AoPS book is the problems. The pages are not filled with endless rote-drill. The problem sets are fantastic. There are 4 problem categories: The beginning-of-section problem, the exercises, the end-of-chapter review problems, and the challenge problems. The beginning-of-section problems, as I have mentioned, are the main teaching tools. Every main result is discovered through these problems. For example, in the first section of chapter 6, the Pythagorean theorem is discovered via similar triangles, and the following problems are example applications of the Pythagorean theorem in finding missing side lengths. These are usually very straightforward. After you go through those, the exercises at the end of each section help to solidify your understanding of the material. The first couple of exercises tend to be very trivial applications, but they get difficult really fast. The hardest exercises are marked with a star. There are relatively few exercises in each section, but they are presented in such a way that endless repetition is not necessary; the exercises in general will test your actual understanding of the concepts rather than simply how to mechanically apply procedures (although the easiest exercises can be used for that purpose). After going through the chapter, there are the review problems, which are the most numerous. These problems are only meant to serve as an assessment of basic familiarity with the concepts, so they are largely straightforward. If you find yourself stuck on a review problem, then go back and reread the chapter. And finally, there are the challenge problems, which are the ones you want to be spending most of your time on. There are usually 10-30 challenge problems at the end of each chapter, and they are the hardest problems in the book. These problems are meant to expand your understanding of the material, and are anything but straightforward. They can get incredibly challenging. Like the exercises, the most challenging challenge problems are marked with a star. There are challenging problems from major mathematics competitions scattered throughout the text, and there are plenty of proof-based problems as well. No two-column BS, either. Rote memorization is ideally the lowest priority when learning math, and the folks over at AoPS put much emphasis on "understanding over memorization," where this text succeeds.

Also, one very subtle thing that was done when writing this book was peppering in cute little cameos from more advanced topics. For example, in a chapter 7 challenge problem, the excircle, excenter, and exradius of a triangle are briefly defined and you are asked to prove a formula for the exradius of a triangle in terms of the triangle's area, semiperimeter, and side lengths. There are also interesting "extras" that occasionally appear in the margins of the pages, which contain anything from relevant quotes to explorations into interesting math concepts. Fagnago's problem, the nine-point circle of a triangle, the eight-point circle of a quadrilateral, a snippet from Archimedes' astoundingly brilliant argument for the volume and surface area of a sphere, and other classical results are shown to inspire and intrigue curious students of mathematics (unlike many other texts, which will emphasize contrived and oversimplified "applications" in these margins while ignoring the actual creativity and imagination involved in real mathematical discovery). A lot of these extras are discovery-based as well, and the reader is encouraged to prove some of those interesting properties. Some of these cameos were meant to be teasers for the topics found in the upcoming "Intermediate Geometry" book, but unfortunately, it seems that AoPS has postponed that project indefinitely.

Again, the organization of this text is amazing. The problems are ordered appropriately by difficulty, and nothing seems out-of-place. There may not be 50 exercises per section, but trust me when I say that the problems in all are more than sufficient to gain a mastery and deep understanding of the material. I cannot think of a better text. Even the acclaimed geometry text by Jurgensen and Brown that was used in honors geometry courses in the 90's cannot begin to compare to this text.

One warning, though: This text is designed to challenge high-performing students. Many students will have an incredibly difficult time without a good instructor.

Love these books!
By Connecticut Mom
My daughter and I are on Chapter 14 - Three-Dimensional Geometry - so I thought it was time for a review.

All my laudatory comments from my Amazon reviews (q.v.) of AoPS's Pre-Algebra and Introduction to Algebra books also apply to this book and the solutions manual. To recap: Very well-written expository material which presents the concepts clearly, and in many instances in insight-giving ways that make your jaw drop at the sheer beauty of mathematics. Brilliant problems, often drawn from math competitions, that are all thriller and no filler. Occasional fascinating sidebars as a reward. Super-rigorous, super-thorough, goes much, much deeper than the typical honors curriculum in schools.

Geometry is the math class that supposedly introduces kids to proof writing, which is what the practice of higher level mathematics looks like. Unfortunately, for reasons that I can only imagine have to do with ease of grading for teachers who aren't very math-literate, "proof" in most high school geometry classes involve making silly tables with statements on one side and reasons on the other. For instance, you might have to say on one side that angle A is equal to itself (duh), and then write "Reflexive Property" on the other side. Because every little step in the reasoning is written out, of necessity the problems can't involve too long a chain of reasoning, and so are limited in their sophistication. These mind-numbing proofs have little in common with what mathematicians do, and they are mercifully absent from AoPS. Instead, the proof problems are some of the most subtle and nuanced in the book.

These books are aimed at the top 5% of students, in terms of raw ability and personal motivation. My own children would NEVER work through these on their own, but luckily I'm here to work by their side. If you're willing to do so (the parent's skill level doesn't have to be top 5%, but it helps not to be math-phobic), I have some tips that may help:

(1) We are not organized enough for a dedicated notebook, and instead work the problems on random bits of paper. It's a good idea, when you're done with a session, to make a note of the next problem to be solved and stick it in as a bookmark. That way if you "forget" to do math for a week or three, you can pick right up where you left off.

(2) Don't pencil the figures! Make a photocopy of the page and write on that instead. Better yet, practice drawing the figure on a separate page. All you really need is a straightedge and a compass, but I like having a circle-drawing template on hand.

(3) Better a lot of short sessions than a few long ones. We aim for about 20 minutes, two to four times a week (and every day during vacations). It might take more than a year to get through the book, but so what? Every bit you do will cause your child's (and your) understanding to skyrocket. Also, the more regular your sessions, the easier it is to recover the proper math mindset. Long breaks in between make returning to math more painful than it needs to be. However, it is important to keep sessions short and have time in between sessions (at least a day) to allow the concepts to be digested.

Geometry is a wonderful subject, much of which was discovered/invented by the ancient Greeks, and studying it at this level is at once a math, history and philosophy lesson.

This is a great book. Some of problems are little bit difficult but they really challenge my son to think. I like the math languages used in the book that are very easy for kids to understand so they can read by themselves.
