The Materials Science of Semiconductors serves as a general textbook on semiconductors, and discusses semiconductors in detail, from the fundamental basis for their electronic structure to engineering of alloys and the effects of defects. Written for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in the hard sciences, this book covers the materials science of semiconductors rather than focusing on electronic devices as a primary topic.

The Materials Science of Semiconductors is focused on classical concepts of materials physics (including band theory), alloy design, defects and their physics, organic electronic materials, amorphous semiconductors, and thin film growth methods. This textbook includes a discussion of organic materials concepts and applications for light emitting and switching devices, and also covers the major methods for processing semiconductors from Czochralsky growth to atomic-layer deposition. Unlike other books on semiconductors, this book discusses how band structures are developed and gives a detailed calculation technique based on the LCAO method, without any significant reliance on a background in quantum mechanics.

The Materials Science of Semiconductors is dedicated to presenting fundamental concepts in a manner that is accessible to students without a background in physics or quantum mechanics. Each chapter includes current applications, particularly in optoelectronics, along with recommended readings and homework problems.

About the Author

Angus Rockett is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a fellow of the AVS and teaches short courses and tuitorials for the AVS, MRS and IEEE. He has in excess of 120 published journal articles and conference proceedings and has conducted research in a wide variety of thin film and electronic materials topics. He received a B.S. in Physics from Brown University in 1980 and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in Materials Science in 1986. He has been a visiting scientist at the Uppsala University in Sweden, the Hahn Meitner Institute in Berlin, Germany and has served as a senior program administrator at the U.S. Department of Energy in Germantown, Maryland.

Excellent educational advice for students and faculty alike

This small volume is an excellent compendium of practical advice for students, faculty, and university administrators on how build strong educational environments. The author, Richard Light, is a professor of education and an educational researcher, and the conclusions he presents are powerful because they are based on more than ten years of detailed interviews with students.
The students were asked to describe their best teachers, the classes that had the greatest impact on their lives, the social experiences on campus that have been most valuable to them, and the things that universities could do to further strengthen the educational environment. What makes a great professor? (It's not theatricality.) What makes a great class? (It's not the quality of the PowerPoint slides.) What makes for great advising? (It's not telling students to get their requirements out of the way.) How can teachers constantly improve their classes? (It's not by handing out an evaluation form at the end of the term.)
Light places particular emphasis on the social environment that universities provide for their students. This is something that has been woefully neglected for more than a generation on many large campuses, and attention to it by faculty is badly needed. I am an advocate of decentralized residential colleges within large universities, and such colleges can provide precisely the kind of environment that Light recommends: stable, rich, genuinely diverse, and full of opportunity.
One popular topic is notable for its absence: technology. There is no discussion of teaching via the web, nothing about distance learning, nothing about video conferencing, yadda, yadda, yadda. The message is clear: outstanding education comes from personal contact, not remote access.
If you are a college professor, this book may be the only general-purpose "education" book that you will ever need. And if you are a student, or the parent of a student, this straightforward guide will help you "make the most of college."

Not really for students...

As a professor, I found the book excellent, both for its many insightful suggestions and as a reminder of the student experience. If I were evaluating this book for faculty, I'd give it five stars.
But the book's title and marketing indicate that this is a how-to book for college students. That's deceptive: It is a summary of findings by Harvard's self-assessment team. Suggestions for students are good when they come, but they're spread between suggestions more useful to college faculty and administration. As an example, one idea is to schedule discussion classes just before dinner, so that students in the class could eat together afterward and possibly continue discussion. That's a great idea for administrators, but students can't make much use of it. The book would be stronger if it were separated for the two potential audiences.
The book also suffers from not being up-front about its origins: It summarizes findings of an assessment project at Harvard, but you won't find it described until you reach the appendix. I realize that fewer copies would be sold if they admitted this in the introduction. But until I reached the appendix, where the project's major questions were finally described, I was left wondering why the book's organization was so lopsided. Particularly, the part on campus diversity was much longer than I expected; it wasn't until I reached the appendix that I learned why. (The appendix was one of the best parts. In fact, I recommend reading it first.)
I'd certainly recommend the book to faculty and administrators from any college. The work is clearly based on extensive, well-done interviews, and the analysis is both well-organized and rich in ideas. Just recognize it for what it is.

This is a MUST for students, parents AND educators

Read MAKING THE MOST OF COLLEGE: STUDENTS
SPEAK THEIR MIND by Richard Light . . . this is a book
that is definitely NOT for everybody . . . but if you're a high
school or college student, a parent of either, or a teacher or
administrator at any level of education, then you should
obtain a copy and devour it as soon as possible! . . . Light,
a professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education,
researched students at that institution for over 10 years . . . but
what he has to say applies to virtually any school at any level.
I've been teaching for some 30 years--can you believe it? (I was
a child prodigy, of course, having started at the tender age of
7. NOT.) . . . Yet even I managed to get several ideas that I plan
to implement just as soon as I can.
I liked the author's use of verbatim quotes from
students . . . in addition, his overall findings made sense to me:
1. Learning outside of classes, especially in residential settings
and extracurricular activities such as the arts, is vital.
2. A large number of students say they learn significantly more
in courses that are highly structured, with relatively many quizzes
and short assignments.
3. Professors increasingly are encouraging students to work
together on homework assignments.
4. Some undergraduates, when asked to identify a particularly
profound or critical experience at college, identify a mentored
internship not done for academic credit.
5. For most students the impact of racial and ethnic diversity on
their college experience is strong.
6. Students who got the most out of college, who grew the most
academically, and who are happiest organize their time to include
activities with faculty members, or with several other students
focused around accomplishing substantive academic work.
7. I was surprised by students' strong attitude toward writing.
8. A large majority of undergraduates describe particular
activities outside the classroom as profoundly affecting their
academic performance.
9. Students talk about [foreign] languages with special
enthusiasm.

Danica Davidson a writer for MTV and author of the Minecraft novels Escape from the Overworld and Attack on the Overworld. A longtime manga fan, her work on manga has been published by MTV, CNN, The Onion, Otaku USA, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Anime News Network and about twenty other places. Fantastic book on how to draw in the manga style. Love the simplicity and clear instructions so that ANYONE can learn!

This book helped me draw Manga. The instructions are written so clearly and she spells out everything you need to do. I like that she starts with a face, and then goes on to describe everything else you need to do in order to draw characters.

This didn't even really teach me anything. For hands, it's, "Draw a rectangle, now draw hand details." For hair, it didn't actually show me HOW to draw it. Would never recommend.

These two volumes constitute "a thoughtful review of the technological changes and their defining reasons rather than a recitation of program development events. The thoughtfulness comes via linkages. For example there's a description of the evolution from aniline-nitric acid propellants used in the WAC Corporal to the inhibited white fuming nitric acid propellant for Vanguard." The second volume in the set shows that rocketry consists "more of engineers doing than [of] scientists knowing." Nevertheless, the reader will encounter again and again the determination of the practitioners to find a workable solution that then goes on to be a fundamental step in the progress of rocketry." These two volumes examine hardware designed for missiles and space-launch vehicles. They trace the evolution of rocket technology from Robert Goddard's early rockets through the development of Titan missiles and from the Vanguard launch vehicle through the space shuttle. Hunley looks at propulsion systems, structural issues, and guidance-and-control devices as well as the fascinating individuals who developed them. He concludes that the major factors advancing the development of this technology included high levels of cold-war funding, many innovations, an engineering culture that promoted technology transfer and was flexible enough to overcome unexpected problems, and management systems that furnished systems engineering and cost control over a huge number of organizations, thereby supporting and driving the improvements to each type of missile and launch vehicle. Since 1990, however, launch-vehicle technology has entered a new phase whose outcomes and outlines are still unclear. These two volumes constitute a unique, invaluable history of rocketry that highlights the creativity, hard work, and trial-and-error procedures that make up the history of what is often (mistakenly) called "rocket science." In fact, the development and operation of rockets involved primarily engineering, not rocket science, as Hunley explains.

An excellent presentation of rocket and space engineering

This is an excellent two volumes book. It is one of the best about space technology, versus fundamental science.
It uses the story of rocket development to outline what modern engineering is all about. The author's choice to divide his subject in two volumes, space launchers versus military missiles, is a good choice, allowing to highlight differences and similarities.

The narrative and chronological style used in both volumes best shows the development of each technology over time. The author gives due credit to the extraordinary contribution to V. Braun, a bit too much to Goddard.

The book's organization by chapters, each describing a launcher family, makes any specialized or focused research easier.
The scope also extends about organizational and managerial influence on the development of a given technology, only when relevant, avoiding `old boys' futile personal career narratives.

My only regret is the lack of data recapitulation tables, by chapter, providing an exhaustive data presentation for the chapter.

It was worth bying.

This is a joke. I have the hard cover and thought this was the whole book. You get 2 chapters for 2 bucks. I can't believe that Amazon allows this. They figure most people won't return for a refund. The best part of the book is missing.

Good News - God is still in control

Almighty God is still in control of everything. He knows how to take good things and make them better but more importantly He know how to take the hurts, aches, and pains of this life and turn them into His perfect plan for our lives. Sometimes we don't see it, but He's there. At each turn, each intersection of our lives He's there. We just need to be reassured that He has our best interest at heart. How do we know? He sent His only son, Jesus, to show us just how much He loves us. A great reminder to those who don't and those that do place their faith in the one true God.

What Confucius said about tigers

If you've read a book or a magazine article about traditional or modern Chinese art, you most likely have encountered at least one picture or sculpture with animals in it, and a cultural explanation - something like, for example, "a crane and a tortoise traditionally symbolized longevity". Now, when you read a casual explanation like this, you sometimes want to ask - does this meaning really exist, and if so, how and when was it actually attested historically? The "when" is particularly interesting, since China has 2,500 years of fairly well recorded history and literature - plus archaeological data (turtle-shell inscriptions, bronze vessels, other art, etc) going back for another millenium beyond that - and a typical Chinese text could use the word "ancient" ("gudaide") for anything that's 300 or 3,000 years old.

If you have ever asked this kind of question, Roel Sterckx's book is for you. It is a detailed analysis of references to animals in literature of ancient China, and the meaning behind them. The author intentionally limits his scope both chronologically and with respect to the kind of material he looks at. The focus of his research is on recorded literature, as opposed to oral folklore, art, or archaeological data. Moreover, he looks primarily at the writings preserved from the Han Dynasty (ca. 200 BC - 200 AD), plus whatever writing reached us from earlier centuries (such as the works ascribed to Confucius - in reality, probably, in Han-era editions anyway). Thus he primarily tries to reconstruct the view of the animal world held by the Chinese scholars and writers of ca. 2000 years ago.

Looking carefully at the material within the scope so defined, Dr. Sterckx concludes that the Chinese literati of old were concerned primarily with the cultural meaning of animals, as opposed to, say, trying to create early biological science (as Needham perhaps would have suggested). As the examples Sterckx has assembled suggest, among main reasons for ancient authors to mention animals was to describe a (real, mythical, or allegorical) wise ruler, whose benevolence is attested by assorted creatures who come to dwell at his court, or to praise a sage capable of understanding the beasts and birds. Looking at various animal allegories the author mentions, one can't help thinking of the mediaeval European bestiaries, which, after all, also were more about moral stories than about real creatures.

Many of the "animal stories" Sterckx mentions in his book have given rise to metaphors that are still alive today. Here we have Confucius encountering a woman living in a remote area who had lost all her male relatives to tigers, but who still does not want to move elsewhere, "because there is no oppressive government here". (And people still talk about Laws Harsh As Tigers). (p. 151). Here we have two mythical beasts, the "jue" and the "qiongqiong juxu", one of which has long hind legs and short front paws and the other, long forelegs and short hind legs, so the two have to cooperate to get around, and to share their food (p. 156); and people in China today still refer to "lang bei" (the wolf ("lang") and the mythical "bei" creature with short front paws) when they talk about criminals acting "hand in glove" with each other.

And on top of this, the book is full of little fascinating stories that you'd have to read the "Shanhaijing", "Huainanzi", and lots of other more obscure books to find out. How do you like, for example the "Spirit tortoise" that a fish farmer should let live in his ponds, so that it would prevent his carps from becoming immortal dragons and flying away? (p. 155).

Overall, the book is a fascinating reading for a lay reader interested in the "animal lore" of ages past, and, I suppose, a treasure trove for an expert who actually reads _wenyan_ and can make use of the sources listed in the 100+ pages of the notes and bibliography.

If the author thinks of producing a new edition of this wonderful book, and making it more appealing to a wider audience (or at least to public libraries throughout the English-speaking world), he may consider doing what van Gulik did in his delightful treatise on The Gibbon in China (1967), or to what Sarah Allan did in The Shape of the Turtle (1991), and to illustrate the book with some of the surviving animal art from the period of his study - or even from much later ages, when appropriate. The present edition has only one illustration - the one on its cover, so a reader may be tempted to read it in parallel with an illustrated edition of "Shanhaijing" or some other such treatise.

Every chapter has something important to say in regards to how a trader approaches the market. It's about finding and implementing strategies.
Lots of charts-Lots of graphs; The Chinese history is a bonus. Very well written and well thought-out.

Trade is war-like, but I did not see how authour did a good job connecting the two

Before I was planning to buy the book I was thinking the book may contain some useful information on day trading, how to think and act when plan a real trading. The book does provide a rich content about Chinese old war strategies and author's personal trading examples, but I do not personally think this was similarly applied to today's stock trading in the US. All or most the author's trading examples are penny stocks purchased used a large share size, this may be useful in author's situation, but I will never use these strategies.

"Shooting the Moon" is middle grade fiction at its best: a setting that draws you in, a story that makes you think, characters that make you care, and a pace that keeps things interesting. One of the best books I've read in aught 8.

The Vietnam war is in full swing and the Dexters are an army family through and through. Instead of "dad", the kids call their father "The Colonial". Like I said, through and through. 12 year old Jamie and her older brother TJ have been preparing for war their whole lives, waging strategic battle with army men for years. TJ, a recent high school graduate, decides to enlist. The strange thing is, The Colonial is not pleased. In fact, he is outright vocal in his opposition. When TJ is shipped overseas, he sends letters home for his parents and rolls of film for Jamie. What's contained in those photographs forces the youngest Dexter to rethink her gung-ho view of war.

This one makes quick work of drawing you in and holding your interest. Dowell ("The Secret Language of Girls", "Chicken Boy", the "Phineas L. MacGuire" books) seamlessly mixes in flashbacks to tell the story from the perspective of Jamie. Her point of view changes over the course of the book, but the transition doesn't feel forced. A gradual and natural changing of opinion is a good thing to see in children's lit.

"Shooting the Moon" is succinct, emotionally rich, and bound to find favor among the upper elementary readers who crack its cover.

I'll be the dissenter

I guess I'll be the dissenter here.

I thought the book was good, very readable, with good chronological order, which helps young readers make more sense of what they read. I could identify with the main character, Jamie. I was a girl during the Vietnam war, I had a father who had been in the military and who thought the war was just. I idolized my father like Jamie idolizes hers. The premise of the book was okay--how a young girl feels about the war her brother is fighting in. Overall, it wasn't bad.

However...(you knew that was coming)...the story falls a little flat because of poor character development, lack of depth in the story development and a hugely unsatisfying ending. It ends so abruptly that I had to look up the author's bio to see if she died before she finished the book. It was the only explanation I could think of to end the book on such an odd place.

Although Jamie, the main character, spends a lot of time with several of the side characters, we find out little about them. Yes, soldiers are trained to be stoic, but the story would have been much better if the author would have let us have the tiniest peek behind the stoicism to see honest emotions. What did her best friend feel when his brother was killed? What emotions were below the surface when he discovered he was about to be shipped to the war? What did the other soldiers really think about Jamie's enthusiasm for war in general? Why didn't the Colonel try harder to prevent his son from enlisting? Just leaving hints about going to college instead of going to war really seems out of character for a hard-driven man who is used to being obeyed.

The mom almost doesn't exist at all. She seems to be in the novel simply to give Jamie a two-parent family. We know nothing about how she felt about her only son enlisting during a time of war. I know several mothers whose sons have done just that in the last couple years and I can tell you that even the "army wives" don't just go on with business as usual, as Jamie's mother seems to do. I would have been nice to experience some of the angst she must have felt at the prospect of her only son potentially being killed.

The motif of the moon is totally lost in the story. There doesn't seem to be any reason at all for TJ to photograph the moon so much. If only we would know WHY the moon is important in this story...

I can guess that Ms. Dowell intends this book to be semiautobiographical? If only she would have shown us the honest emotions this book begs for, it would have been a supremely wonderful read. As it is, I have to wonder what the point of the story is.
