I dunno why anyone would give this one star. It's an interesting read about a poor english lad turned pro football player turned actor. Maybe someone thought they were reading about mother Theresa. I enjoyed it.

meretricious trash
By Wingate
In the UK Jones was best known for his infamous record as a professional footballer,12 sendings off and the fastest ever caution,at 3 seconds. In the US he is best known for his appearance in films,i wont call it acting. In this book he seems quite keen to blame it all on his temper. He doesn't seem to have sort any sort of mental help till his wife caught him snogging a Russian woman on Youtube. He quotes Trevor Brooking, one of England's best players as calling him a thug.Well I would fully agree with Brooking. As to his "acting" well I saw his first film Lock stock etc which I thought gratuitously violent.I haven't watched any others and nor do I intend to do.This awful book is by the way ghost written, acknowledged on the final page.Thankfully I borrowed this from the public library, since I certainly wouldn't have paid for it.So if you enjoy violence this is your kind of book.If you don't then just one word of advice....avoid!

Not all racial incidents are racist incidents, Lawrence Blum says. "We need a more varied and nuanced moral vocabulary for talking about the arena of race. We should not be faced with a choice of 'racism' or nothing." Use of the word "racism" is pervasive: An article about the NAACP's criticism of television networks for casting too few "minority" actors in lead roles asks, "Is television a racist institution?" A white girl in Virginia says it is racist for her African-American teacher to wear African attire.

Blum argues that a growing tendency to castigate as "racism" everything that goes wrong in the racial domain reduces the term's power to evoke moral outrage. In "I'm Not a Racist, But . . .", Blum develops a historically grounded account of racism as the deeply morally-charged notion it has become. He addresses the question whether people of color can be racist, defines types of racism, and identifies debased and inappropriate usages of the term. Though racial insensitivity, racial anxiety, racial ignorance and racial injustice are, in his view, not "racism," they are racial ills that should elicit moral concern.

Blum argues that "race" itself, even when not serving distinct racial malfeasance, is a morally destructive idea, implying moral distance and unequal worth. History and genetic science reveal both the avoidability and the falsity of the idea of race. Blum argues that we can give up the idea of race, but must recognize that racial groups' historical and social experience has been shaped by having been treated as if they were races.

From Publishers Weekly
Media, politicians, social and political groups and individuals use the term "racism" casually and inaccurately, thereby stripping the concept of its meaning, argues Lawrence Blum in I'm Not a Racist, But...: The Moral Quandary of Race. Not all interracial difficulties involve racism, he contends, but society does not have the vocabulary to discuss racial overtones with greater subtlety. Thus people and institutions fearful of being called racist feel defensive when racial issues are raised, perpetuating the status quo of race relations. Blum (Moral Perception and Particularity), professor of philosophy and of liberal arts and education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, asserts that only "certain especially serious moral failings and violations" merit the designation "racism." Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between "ridding ourselves of the myth of race" and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history.

From Booklist
The term racism has been so overused that it is in danger of losing its moral significance, according to philosophy professor Blum, who argues for clearer, more precise use of the word and related terminology. Blum examines related concepts and terms --institutional racism, personal racism, racist, racist beliefs--and their interplay as he explores the moral implications of racism on a multiplicity of levels. A section on "colorblindness" is especially enlightening, given the often-contradictory use of the concept. The author surveys the history of the concept of race and its associated development with the enslavement of Africans. While he argues that "race," as we generally use that term, does not exist, racialized groups as socially constructed do, with import and consequences often associated with that term. Blum recognizes the ideal of abandoning use of the concept of race, but also acknowledges the practical need to remedy wrongs of the past and present. This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations. Vernon Ford

Review

"Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between 'ridding ourselves of the myth of race' and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history."―Publishers Weekly

"This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations."―Booklist

"In his informative treatment of the concept of racism, Lawrence Blum is most concerned with the dangers of over-appropriation. He fears that the accusation 'racist' is now used so casually and widely that it is in danger of loosing its power to shame. . . . His is a book that can help untangle many of the individual issues that racism raises and is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied educational and social philosophy."―Teachers College Record

"Few topics are in such desperate need of clear analysis as the subject of race. . . . In this concise volume, Blum brings the precision of a moral philosopher to bear on this perennial American dilemma, with generally helpful results. . . . A fresh and important contribution to applied social philosophy, recommended for general readers, upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty."―Choice

"Blum's thoughts support his main argument: that calm, reasoned deliberation about injustices can give us the moral vocabulary we need to do better as a society."―Boston Review

"This is a useful reference for anyone who wishes to think intelligently about the problem of race."―MultiCultural Review

"This book combines clarity and compassion to an extraordinary degree, while surveying in an accessible way a vast range of thinking about race. It will be enormously useful to teachers, at both high school and college levels; it will advance the debate among those who think about race; but above all, its wide diffusion will benefit all of us as citizens of a racialized society."―Kwame Anthony Appiah, Carswell Professor of Afro-American Studies and of Philosophy, Harvard University

"In 'I'm Not A Racist, But . . .' Lawrence Blum offers answers for our time about what race is, who is a racist, and ways for people to talk about the racialized features of our society without falling into name-calling or defensiveness. With exemplary moral and analytic clarity, Blum offers educators, students, lawyers, judges, leaders, and citizens tools for building a nation of equality, comity, and respect for each person."―Martha Minow, Harvard University Law School

"Following the findings of modern science, Blum holds that (biological) races do not exist, but racialized populations do, as a consequence of the Western world's subordinating and inferiorizing other peoples as well as some of their own populations. He insightfully examines and interprets contemporary attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about race in the United States and argues that 'race' is fundamentally a moral problem. In confronting this problem, Blum challenges us to recognize and distinguish the varied manifestations of this racialized world view, from extreme racism to racial insensitivity and ignorance, which carry different moral valences. An excellent, thought-provoking book, with powerful messages, that should be widely read."―Audrey Smedley, Virginia Commonwealth University

"This much-needed book challenges the idea that justice in a historically racist society can be achieved through a policy of race neutrality alone. Lawrence Blum shows the many ways in which racism involves more than just individual attitudes and discusses the concepts of race and racism in a philosophically insightful way. 'I'm Not a Racist, But . . .' is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied social philosophy."―Walter Feinberg, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

"With an impressive combination of moral acuteness, precision of reasoning, and wide-ranging empirical knowledge, Lawrence Blum, a fine philosopher, dissects our concepts of race and racism. He argues that 'racism' has all too frequently been a catch-all label for people and conduct of many different types, and that we will gain as a society if we make many more careful distinctions; between actions and traits of character, between the acts of dominant groups and reactive actions of subordinated groups, and above all, between racism, a morally grave failing involving inferioriaztion or animosity, and other moral failings, such as racial insensitivity, race-related ignorance, and deficient appreciation of individuality. Written in a lively, clear, and accessible style, Blum's book makes a major contribution toward a style of politics that rejects mere epithets and slogans in favor of thoughtful deliberation about shared problems."―Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freud Professor of Law and Ethics, The University of Chicago

A Really Important Book
By A Customer
This book just has so much that's useful in it I forget that it's written by a philosopher; and yet everything the author says is said very carefully and is so well-reasoned. What is racism? What is race? Can blacks be racist too? These are some of the questions addressed. I really love the examples the author uses where he asks the reader to consider whether the response is "racist" or not and his references to current movies; and I don't think I've ever read a better "brief history" of race and racism. That chapter in particular is a must-read for those of us who teach sociology, psychology, or history courses in race or prejudice. His approach is so much more nuanced than most in his understanding of the social construction of race alongside his understanding that we can not forget that shared historical and social experiences mean something central to people. This book is destined to become a source that scholars and educators alike will turn to and recommend to others. Not a flash in the pan treatment of a trendy topic -- but a really important book!

Simply Superb
By David Schraub
A clear, engaging, and sophisticated analysis of America's most confounding problem. Blum outlines a progressive and compelling structure of how race works in America, how race talk is stifled, and how we overuse the term "racism." The most important thing his book adds to the discussion is not just that "racism" is an overloaded term. It's the call for a "more complex vocabulary" to deal with race. That is, in the status quo, one is either "racist" (evil) or not racist (good). This makes the definition of "racist" a scorched-earth battle, because the winner takes all. Blum argues convincingly that we should consider acts of racial insensitivity or subconscious racial prejudices to be really bad things, and work proactively to eliminate them, but should not necessarily tag them with the label of "racist". The simultanously concedes and turns the conservative objection that progressive race scholars are always "playing the race card" because it shifts the frame of debate--we need to discuss race issues, so we'll change the rhetoric we use, but we're not going to excuse bad conduct on your part just because it doesn't rise to the moral evil of slavery or Jim Crow.

An ounce of Clarity is Worth a Pound of confusion
By Herbert L Calhoun
This is a mature, if not a rather sophisticated treatment of a painful subject in a society whose reality and consciousness still rests comfortably on a "soft Apartheid-like racist" social order. Very gently, Professor Blum, a renowned philosopher, guides and clarifies as he enlightens. In the process of stripping away some of the emotion-laden baggage associated with the word "racism," he shows that even in a race-based society there is considerable room for clarity and nuance.

This is a very useful contribution, especially in the way he makes us aware of how our hypersensitivity to the way the word "racism" is used, itself continues to play an important but unconscious role in helping to maintain and protect social advantages and at the same time continues to help stifle a smooth transition to full equality between the races. This is a powerful message all by itself and is alone worth five stars.

My only complaint about the book is that there IS such a thing as "nuance overkill," -- of achieving just a bit too much subtlety. After all, the conservative ideologue, Denesh d' Sousa, in his book "The End of Racism," speaks of his own shades and nuances of the word racism. He uses the euphemisms "strategic," "defensive," and "situational" racism, with equal facility and with equal claims to a need for clarity. According to him, these are also clarifications that fit the reality of many whites - people who just coincidently also happen to be those Americans anxious to avoid having the "albatross of racism" hung around their necks.

I do believe that the word "racism" can be sliced-and-diced, peeled back, and parsed and finessed so much that it is bleached of all its affective content - and is thus rendered into an emotionless abstraction. Now tell me, honestly, whose interests does this bleaching process really serve? Do we really want to do that in a race sensitive culture?

Are we pretending not to know that on the backside of all the emotion packed into the use of the word "racism" is also built a "moral hammer." The job of that hammer is to not allow whites to remain too snug in their comfort zone of continuing to impose "the ways of racism" on the rest of us. In a real sense, it is the only moral hammer that remains in American society. It is the only thing between us becoming a neo-racist and Fascist society, and one that continues to move "ever-so-imperceptively" towards the equality the U.S. Constitution was intended to achieve.

But more than this, at some point one must sit back and "call a spade a spade." And here the double entendre is not intended to refer only to blacks, but also to whites, who continue to be sensitive to the word "racism" primarily because of the guilt it induces about their passive roles in maintaining a race-based culture.

No whites should be allowed to forget or allowed to miss the point that the word "racism" recalls how much the very idea of whiteness, (upon which most Americans identities -- and indeed the very essence of their humanity rest), continues to ride on the crest of a mostly false history that has allowed them to accumulate and store enormous "racist" advantages.

Thus the word, "racism," no matter how it is parsed, no matter how nuanced, no matter how much subtlety is added to the soup of our national discourse, will always retain a sensitive spot in the white psyche. The word "racism" cannot be further "purged" or "defanged." There is a natural end point to this process of parsing the word racism. Beyond that, the circle of re-empowering racists begins all over again.

As Albert Einstein is reputed to have once said, "we should make things as simple as possible, but not simpler than necessary." The same applies to the word "racism." Sometimes, an ounce of clarity is worth a pound of confusion. At other times, too much clarity can falsify reality in unintended ways.

Still the best book on the subject in print. Five Stars

Very helpful for studying MCQs for your exams. The questions do get tricky, purposefully so, and the answers provide sufficient detail as to why the correct answer was the better answer. By quizzing myself using this book, and using AdaptiBar.com*, you should ace your multiple choice exams.

*I am not affiliated in any way with AdaptiBar.com. I subscribed to their service, at full cost, and am simply blown away by the "smart" approach they take for quizzing.

Heating and Cooling of Buildings: Design for Efficiency, by Jan F. Kreider, Ari Rabl, Peter Curtiss

For use on HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) courses offered in mechanical and some civil engineering departments, this text emphasizes the building envelope aspect of heating and cooling systems as opposed to the mechanical equipment involved, and focuses on design optimization. In view of the importance of energy use for lighting, approaches to energy efficiency are dealt with. It also presents the methods of ASHRAE, explaining the physical principles on which they are based. The emphasis on critical thinking is designed to encourage students to think in context and to ask whether claims and/or results make sense. Numerous examples are presented and solved in a uniform format which students are encouraged to use for homework problems and for calculations encountered in their professional careers.

Excelent Text on the subject of HVAC
By A Customer
This is the best book on this subject I have found. It is aimed at practicing engineers and engineering students however. It is very mathmatical and may not be of much use to technicians.

Oh, Brother! I'm watching my brother swagger through our New York City apartment. . .smiling. Rhys, the detached, surly man who turned brooding into an art form. But he's not brooding now. No, he's practically threatening to pistol whip me for shaking hands with the beautiful, half-dressed creature named Jane who just tried to sneak out of his bedroom. Weird. Brother Grim has a sex drive? That's not all that has me freaked out. Something terrible happened last night, something that made Rhys break his own rule and save the life of a mortal. Trouble is he doesn't remember anything from the past two hundred years. Like that he's a vampire, not a Regency viscount with an English accent. All I know is this mortal woman has managed to touch my brother's frozen heart, and I, Sebastian Young, will do whatever it takes to help him keep her. . .

From Booklist
Despite its lighthearted title, this is a darkly erotic novel. After a disastrous first day in the Big Apple, Jane gets inebriated at a bar with the help of a charming stranger. Rhys, knowing the ex-con's intentions are bad, follows them when they leave, saving Jane from rape. But during the attack, Jane loses her most precious possession--a chain with her parents' rings on it. She goes back to find it and finds her hero being viciously assaulted by his brother, Christian. Salvation comes in the form of Rhy's other brother, Sebastian, who offers to pay Jane to look after Rhys, who has lost his memory and now believes he is still a nineteenth-century viscount, not the 208-year-old vampire he really is. He also thinks Jane is his bride. Jane is in danger in more ways than one, and Love's clever amnesiac twist leaves the reader in suspense. Those who like vampire stories hot and steamy will go for this sensuous paranormal. Shelley Mosley

2 Stars - Didn't Do It for Me
By kooritsuki
Although still new to the paranormal romance genre, I've always been in love with vampire-related stories. This book, although was not a bad read did not do it for me.

First of all, the character development is quite weak. Neither Rhys nor Jane has anything that is particularly special about their character. And because of this, it gets very difficult to see why they have fallen for each other so "deeply," as the story suggests. And it is also difficult to see how "deep" their love was for each other, as there really are no significant events in the story to show it to the reader, other than when Christian, Rhy's brother, attacks Jane.

In addition, the storyline is quite weak. Ms. Love was not able to build enough suspense for the climax of the story. There were many times throughout the book when I thought, "ok, something should be happening," but then nothing does. And the 2 love birds just went about doing the deed again and again. So when Christian finally makes his move, I was already yawning.

In short, this book is weak on both character and plot development. It wouldn't keep me turning the pages. What it did kept me doing was looking at how many pages are left in the book, and thinking of which book to read next.

2 stars for this book for that it wasn't so bad that I had to put it down, and because I am still somewhat interested in the two other brothers' stories. Although, those books has just been moved to my low priority list.

Excellent! Excellent!
By S. Hathaway
Kathy Love immediately drew me in with the intriguing characters of Rhys and Jane (what brought them to the bar in the first place). Then, why was Rhys' brother, Christian, so miffed with him that he wanted to kill him? Nothing gets told right away (exactly what happened with Rhys and the woman Christian thought he loved?), but just enough to keep me interested. The characters had depth and were actually believable (vampires, believable?) -- and likable. Rhys' other brother, Sebastian, was hilarious with all the stunts he pulled on the amnesiac Rhys (a vampire with amnesia who forgets he's a vampire?).

The love scenes were mesmerizing. I've read several romances and the love scenes got to the point where they were tedious; I thought I'd become jaded. Kathy Love's love scenes were highly original and I read with bated breath. When I thought she couldn't possibly throw in another love scenario, she did. Personally, I like the bathtub scene the best.

A great book to read when you have enough time set aside. Don't expect to be able to easily set it aside and get back to it. I made the mistake of starting to read this book at night. I had a hard time putting it down as it's such a page-turner. Needless to say, I lost a lot of sleep.

This was the best vampire romance book I've read so far as it had wonderful characters, plot and suspense. I will definitely be purchasing more of Kathy Love's books.

It was definitely erotic but where were the vamps???
By paranormal junkie
At first I kind of felt cheated by this book. With the title and the cute cover I was thinking this would be a light hearted, maybe even funny vampire romance novel. Not so much. I hope it's not only me but this didn't feel very "vampirey" at all. It felt like an erotic romance novel that fell short on the storyline and character development. The heroine Jane (if you can go as far as to call her that!) was completely underdeveloped and there wasn't much about her to like! All we really know is that she had a rough childhood. Ok. Her and Rhys certainly fell fast and hard for eachother but... why? There was nothing that made me feel why they had to have each other so badly. Jane says she's in love with Rhys but all the 2 did was have a bunch of sex (very well written sex!) so really she's in lust? What? IDK. If you want a sexy, fluffy book with not much background or story then pick this one up.

The Scene: an uninhabited island

Act 1 Scene 1 running scene 1

A tempestuous noise of thunder and lightning heard. Enter a Shipmaster and a Boatswain

MASTER Boatswain!

BOATSWAIN Here, master. What cheer?

MASTER Good: speak to th'mariners. Fall to't yarely, or we run ourselves aground! Bestir, bestir! Exit

Enter Mariners

BOATSWAIN Heigh, my hearts! Cheerly, cheerly, my hearts! Yare, yare! Take in the topsail. Tend to th'master's whistle.- Blow, till thou burst thy wind, if room enough.

Enter Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Ferdinand, Gonzalo and others

ALONSO Good boatswain, have care. Where's the master? Play the men.

BOATSWAIN I pray now, keep below.

ANTONIO Where is the master, boatswain?

BOATSWAIN Do you not hear him? You mar our labour. Keep your cabins! You do assist the storm.

GONZALO Nay, good, be patient.

BOATSWAIN When the sea is. Hence! What cares these roarers for the name of king? To cabin! Silence! Trouble us not.

GONZALO Good, yet remember whom thou hast aboard.

BOATSWAIN None that I more love than myself. You are a counsellor: if you can command these elements to silence, and work the peace of the present, we will not hand a rope more: use your authority. If you cannot, give thanks you have lived so long, and make yourself ready in your cabin for the mischance of the hour, if it so hap.- Cheerly, good hearts!- Out of our way, I say.

Exeunt [Boatswain with Mariners, followed by Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio and Ferdinand]

GONZALO I have great comfort from this fellow: methinks he hath no drowning mark upon him: his complexion is perfect gallows. Stand fast, good Fate, to his hanging: make the rope of his destiny our cable, for our own doth little advantage. If he be not born to be hanged, our case is miserable. Exit

Enter Boatswain

BOATSWAIN Down with the topmast! Yare! Lower, lower! Bring her to try with main course. (A cry within) A plague upon this howling! They are louder than the weather or our office.

Enter Sebastian, Antonio and Gonzalo

Yet again? What do you here? Shall we give o'er and drown? Have you a mind to sink?

SEBASTIAN A pox o'your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog!

BOATSWAIN Work you then.

ANTONIO Hang, cur! Hang, you whoreson, insolent noisemaker! We are less afraid to be drowned than thou art.

GONZALO I'll warrant him for drowning, though the ship were no stronger than a nutshell and as leaky as an unstanched wench.

BOATSWAIN Lay her ahold, ahold! Set her two courses off to sea again! Lay her off!

Enter Mariners, wet

MARINERS All lost! To prayers, to prayers! All lost!

BOATSWAIN What, must our mouths be cold?

GONZALO The king and prince at prayers: let's assist them, for our case is as theirs.

SEBASTIAN I'm out of patience.

ANTONIO We are merely cheated of our lives by drunkards. This wide-chopped rascal: would thou mightst lie drowning, the washing of ten tides!

GONZALO He'll be hanged yet,
Though every drop of water swear against it
And gape at wid'st to glut him. [Exeunt Boatswain and Mariners]

A confused noise within

[VOICES OFF-STAGE] Mercy on us! - We split, we split! - Farewell, my wife and children! - Farewell, brother! - We split, we split, we split!

ANTONIO Let's all sink wi'th'king.

SEBASTIAN Let's take leave of him. Exeunt [Antonio and Sebastian]

GONZALO Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren ground: long heath, brown furze, anything. The wills above be done! But I would fain die a dry death.

Exit

Act 1 Scene 2 running scene 2

Enter Prospero and Miranda

MIRANDA If by your art, my dearest father, you have
Put the wild waters in this roar, allay them.
The sky, it seems, would pour down stinking pitch,
But that the sea, mounting to th'welkin's cheek,
Dashes the fire out. O, I have suffered
With those that I saw suffer: a brave vessel -
Who had, no doubt, some noble creature in her -
Dashed all to pieces. O, the cry did knock
Against my very heart. Poor souls, they perished.
Had I been any god of power, I would
Have sunk the sea within the earth, or ere
It should the good ship so have swallowed, and
The fraughting souls within her.

PROSPERO Be collected:
No more amazement. Tell your piteous heart
There's no harm done.

MIRANDA O, woe the day!

PROSPERO No harm:
I have done nothing but in care of thee -
Of thee, my dear one, thee, my daughter - who
Art ignorant of what thou art: nought knowing
Of whence I am, nor that I am more better
Than Prospero, master of a full poor cell,
And thy no greater father.

MIRANDA More to know
Did never meddle with my thoughts.

PROSPERO 'Tis time
I should inform thee further. Lend thy hand
And pluck my magic garment from me. So:
Lie there, my art. Wipe thou thine eyes, have his magic cloak
comfort.
The direful spectacle of the wreck, which touched
The very virtue of compassion in thee,
I have with such provision in mine art
So safely ordered that there is no soul -
No, not so much perdition as an hair
Betid to any creature in the vessel
Which thou heard'st cry, which thou saw'st sink. Sit
down, [Miranda sits]
For thou must now know further.

MIRANDA You have often
Begun to tell me what I am, but stopped
And left me to a bootless inquisition,
Concluding 'Stay: not yet.'

PROSPERO The hour's now come,
The very minute bids thee ope thine ear:
Obey, and be attentive. Canst thou remember
A time before we came unto this cell?
I do not think thou canst, for then thou wast not
Out three years old.

MIRANDA Certainly, sir, I can.

PROSPERO By what? By any other house or person?
Of any thing the image, tell me, that
Hath kept with thy remembrance.

MIRANDA 'Tis far off,
And rather like a dream than an assurance
That my remembrance warrants. Had I not
Four or five women once that tended me?

PROSPERO Thou hadst; and more, Miranda. But how is it
That this lives in thy mind? What see'st thou else
In the dark backward and abysm of time?
If thou rememb'rest aught ere thou cam'st here,
How thou cam'st here thou mayst.

MIRANDA But that I do not.

PROSPERO Twelve year since, Miranda, twelve year since,
Thy father was the Duke of Milan and
A prince of power.

MIRANDA Sir, are not you my father?

PROSPERO Thy mother was a piece of virtue, and
She said thou wast my daughter; and thy father
Was Duke of Milan, and his only heir
And princess, no worse issued.

MIRANDA O the heavens!
What foul play had we, that we came from thence?
Or blessd wast we did?

PROSPERO Both, both, my girl.
By foul play - as thou say'st - were we heaved
thence,
But blessedly holp hither.

MIRANDA O, my heart bleeds
To think o'th'teen that I have turned you to,
Which is from my remembrance. Please you, further.

PROSPERO My brother and thy uncle, called Antonio -
I pray thee, mark me - that a brother should
Be so perfidious - he whom next thyself
Of all the world I loved, and to him put
The manage of my state, as at that time
Through all the signories it was the first,
And Prospero the prime duke, being so reputed
In dignity, and for the liberal arts
Without a parallel; those being all my study,
The government I cast upon my brother
And to my state grew stranger, being transported
And rapt in secret studies. Thy false uncle -
Dost thou attend me?

MIRANDA Sir, most heedfully.

PROSPERO Being once perfected how to grant suits,
How to deny them, who t'advance and who
To trash for over-topping, new created
The creatures that were mine, I say, or changed 'em,
Or else new formed 'em; having both the key
Of officer and office, set all hearts i'th'state
To what tune pleased his ear, that now he was
The ivy which had hid my princely trunk
And sucked my verdure out on't.- Thou attend'st
not.

MIRANDA O good sir, I do.

PROSPERO I pray thee, mark me:
I, thus neglecting worldly ends, all dedicated
To closeness and the bettering of my mind
With that, which but by being so retired,
O'er-prized all popular rate, in my false brother
Awaked an evil nature, and my trust,
Like a good parent, did beget of him
A falsehood in its contrary, as great
As my trust was, which had indeed no limit,
A confidence sans bound. He being thus lorded,
Not only with what my revenue yielded,
But what my power might else exact: like one
Who having into truth, by telling of it,
Made such a sinner of his memory
To credit his own lie, he did believe
He was indeed the duke, out o'th'substitution
And executing th'outward face of royalty
With all prerogative: hence his ambition growing -
Dost thou hear?

MIRANDA Your tale, sir, would cure deafness.

PROSPERO To have no screen between this part he played,
And him he played it for, he needs will be
Absolute Milan. Me - poor man - my library
Was dukedom large enough: of temporal royalties
He thinks me now incapable. Confederates -
So dry he was for sway - wi'th'King of Naples
To give him annual tribute, do him homage,
Subject his coronet to his crown, and bend
The dukedom yet unbowed - alas, poor Milan -
To most ignoble stooping.

MIRANDA O the heavens!

PROSPERO Mark his condition and th'event, then tell me
If this might be a brother.

MIRANDA I should sin
To think but nobly of my grandmother:
Good wombs have borne bad sons.

PROSPERO Now the condition.
This King of Naples, being an enemy
To me inveterate, hearkens my brother's suit,
Which was, that he, in lieu o'th'premises
Of homage, and I know not how much tribute,
Should presently extirpate me and mine
Out of the dukedom, and confer fair Milan,
With all the honours, on my brother: whereon,
A treacherous army levied, one midnight
Fated to th'purpose, did Antonio open
The gates of Milan, and i'th'dead of darkness
The ministers for th'purpose hurried thence
Me and thy crying self.

MIRANDA Alack, for pity!
I, not rememb'ring how I cried out then,
Will cry it o'er again: it is a hint
That wrings mine eyes to't.

PROSPERO Hear a little further,
And then I'll bring thee to the present business
Which now's upon's: without the which, this story
Were most impertinent.

MIRANDA Wherefore did they not
That hour destroy us?

PROSPERO Well demanded, wench:
My tale provokes that question. Dear, they durst not,
So dear the love my people bore me: nor set
A mark so bloody on the business: but
With colours fairer, painted their foul ends.
In few, they hurried us aboard a barque,
Bore us some leagues to sea, where they prepared
A rotten carcass of a butt, not rigged,
Nor tackle, sail, nor mast: the very rats
Instinctively have quit it. There they hoist us,
To cry to th'sea that roared to us; to sigh
To th'winds, whose pity sighing back again,
Did us but loving wrong.

MIRANDA Alack, what trouble
Was I then to you!

PROSPERO O, a cherubin
Thou wast that did preserve me. Thou didst smile,
Infusd with a fortitude from heaven,
When I have decked the sea with drops full salt,
Under my burden groaned, which raised in me
An undergoing stomach, to bear up
Against what should ensue.

MIRANDA How came we ashore?

PROSPERO By providence divine.
Some food we had, and some fresh water, that
A noble Neapolitan, Gonzalo,
Out of his charity - who being then appointed
Master of this design - did give us, with
Rich garments, linens, stuffs and necessaries,
Which since have steaded much. So, of
his gentleness,
Knowing I loved my books, he furnished me
From mine own library with volumes that
I prize above my dukedom.

MIRANDA Would I might
But ever see that man.

PROSPERO Now I arise: Prospero stands
Sit still, and hear the last of our sea-sorrow.
Here in this island we arrived, and here
Have I, thy schoolmaster, made thee more profit
Than other princes can that have more time
For vainer hours, and tutors not so careful.

MIRANDA Heavens thank you for't. And now, I pray you,
sir,
For still 'tis beating in my mind: your reason
For raising this sea-storm?

PROSPERO Know thus far forth:
By accident most strange, bountiful Fortune -
Now my dear lady - hath mine enemies
Brought to this shore: and by my prescience
I find my zenith doth depend upon
A most auspicious star, whose influence
If now I court not, but omit, my fortunes
Will ever after droop. Here cease more questions:
Thou art inclined to sleep. 'Tis a good dullness,
And give it way: I know thou canst not choose.- Miranda
Come away, servant, come. I am ready now. sleeps
Approach, my Ariel, come.

Enter Ariel

ARIEL All hail, great master! Grave sir, hail! I come
To answer thy best pleasure; be't to fly,
To swim, to dive into the fire, to ride
On the curled clouds: to thy strong bidding task
Ariel and all his quality.

PROSPERO Hast thou, spirit,
Performed to point the tempest that I bade thee?

ARIEL To every article.
I boarded the king's ship: now on the beak,
Now in the waist, the deck, in every cabin,
I flamed amazement: sometime I'd divide
And burn in many places; on the topmast,
The yards and bowsprit would I flame distinctly,
Then meet and join. Jove's lightning, the precursors
O'th'dreadful thunderclaps, more momentary
And sight-outrunning were not; the fire and cracks
Of sulphurous roaring, the most mighty Neptune
Seem to besiege and make his bold waves tremble,
Yea, his dread trident shake.

PROSPERO My brave spirit!
Who was so firm, so constant, that this coil
Would not infect his reason?

ARIEL Not a soul
But felt a fever of the mad and played
Some tricks of desperation. All but mariners
Plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel,
Then all afire with me: the king's son, Ferdinand,
With hair up-staring - then like reeds, not hair -
Was the first man that leaped; cried 'Hell is empty
And all the devils are here.'

PROSPERO Why, that's my spirit!
But was not this nigh shore?

ARIEL Close by, my master.

PROSPERO But are they, Ariel, safe?

ARIEL Not a hair perished:
On their sustaining garments not a blemish,
But fresher than before: and, as thou bad'st me,
In troops I have dispersed them 'bout the isle.
The king's son have I landed by himself,
Whom I left cooling of the air with sighs
In an odd angle of the isle, and sitting,
His arms in this sad knot. [Folds his arms]

What you deserve from Norton at a good price.
By Antoine Boisvert
I found this a very helpful and interesting adjunct to the play proper (although, of course, it has the play in it). Like most NCE's it is stuffed with extras: primary sources, critical reactions and analyses, and creative reinterpretations. The price is a little higher than the Folger or other popular Shakepeare's paperbacks, but you get a lot of bang for only a few extra bucks. Pretty cool. I found it worked well as a "Teacher's Edition."

Ian Myles Slater on: NCE Tempest Gets the Magic Right
By Ian M. Slater
The Norton Critical Edition of the "The Tempest," edited by Peter Hulme and William H. Sherman, is my current favorite among editions of the play (edging out, for example, Frank Kermode's old edition for the "Arden Shakespeare" series.) That is more than a casual opinion. "The Tempest" is one of my favorite Shakespearean comedies (the First Folio description), alongside "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and as a one-time graduate student in English, I have spent a lot of time reading and thinking about Shakespeare.

It is also one of my favorite pre-modern fantasy stories, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about that subject as well. (I did a lot of pre-Amazon reviewing of fantasy, going back to the days of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series.) It can meet most of the apparent mix-and-match requirements of current genre fantasy; an intimidating magician with a beautiful daughter, a brash would-be hero, political plots, their elaborate back-story, powerful spirits and a semi-human monster, and comic low-life characters. The main difference (leaving aside the medium and the style) is the question of whether evil is to be punished, or forgiven.

Hulme and Sherman have included, along with the standard selections from famous critics, and a welcome assortment of adaptations and parodies, a good selection of modern critical re-visionings, of the play, from various ideological standpoints. (For a much fuller representation, and some responses, see Gerald Graff and James Phelan, "The Tempest: A Case Study in Critical Controversy," now in its second edition.) All of these reconsiderations are at least interesting, and some of them are quite insightful.

Not that I agree with all of them. I've been known to express annoyance at, in particular, the hyper-serious "Post-Colonialist" attacks on it as some sort of Imperialist manifesto, or blueprint for the future English colonies in the New World, and even for the earlier Spanish conquests in the New World. (Presumably with the help of a convenient time machine! No, I'm not making that up -- but I am taking advantage of some ill-considered rhetorical flourishes by, e.g., George Lamming.)

After all, how can you ignore, that, except for some impatient or terrified seamen, most of the Europeans we encounter are either usurpers, or criminally-inclined, or naively idealistic, or fairly ineffectual, or drunk (and various combinations)? A selection of character faults which includes most members of the ruling class.

Or that Prospero, deposed Duke of Milan (to be pronounced Millen), has managed to replace his former complacency, not so much with keen-eyed vigilance, as with a short temper?

Or that the strange-looking Caliban, far from being a truly aboriginal inhabitant enslaved by Prospero, is the offspring of a marooned visitor-turned-conqueror? The actual native population of the island seems to consist of some surprisingly large animals for such a small area, and a variety of spirits dominated by Ariel, who made a bargain with Prospero.

Actually, these can be ignored pretty easily, since, so far as I can tell, most critics of any kind in the last four hundred years have managed to do exactly that. Along with ignoring -- or, more exactly, accepting without question -- Shakespeare's working assumptions about class and gender. Which, when examined closely, reveal him to have been an Elizabethan Englishman, inclined to consider hierarchy to be the basis of human existence, and with the social conservatism to be expected of an established property-owner. And in any case, the text, and any sub-text, probably tells us more about play's audience, and the possibility of censorship, than about the thoroughly professional author-actor who wrote it.

As for the editing of the play itself, "The Tempest" presents relatively few problems, since it occurs only in the First Folio, where it is the first play a prospective reader (or purchaser) encounters. A good scribal copy seems to have been used to set up a particularly attractive text, with only a handful of problems to be resolved. (The assignment and lineation of some of the prose, particularly in the opening scene, presents problems which will usually escape the reader or audience.) The page notes do not address these issues, but address the meanings of words, the intent of unfamiliar grammatical constructions, and a few other points of immediate importance.

Having brought up Frank Kermode's out-of-print edition, I feel I should mention some other alternatives to the Norton edition. Among familiar stand-bys (at least when I was in school), I would single out Robert Langbaum's edition of "The Tempest" for The Signet Classics, which is currently available in an expanded form (new introduction by the General Editor, new critical readings, new bibliography). Like those mentioned below, it is a mass-market paperback.

The "Folger Library General Reader's Shakespeare" editions of the plays, originally published by Washington Square Press back in the 1950-60s, edited by Louis B. Wright and Virginia A. LaMar, was immediately recognizable by the use of facing-page notes (instead of footnotes), and period illustrations selected from the Folger Library collections. The format remains, but whole series was replaced in the 1990s by completely new versions under the editorship of Barbara A. Mowat and Paul Werstine. "The New Folger Library" edition of "The Tempest" appeared in 1994, with the new series and play introductions, and an essay, "A Modern Perspective," by Mowat. It had a beautiful cover by Kinuko Y. Craft (an unusually convincing Ariel, Prospero, and Miranda). Later, the running title became just "Folger Shakespeare Library," and new, non-representational, covers were used. Some of these later printings were in trade-paperback format, but I haven't seen such an edition of "The Tempest."

Norton Critical Editions - The Most Dependable Brand in Lit
By Dante Minghella
What's to say? It's The Tempest. Bar the one pretentious single-star review further down, this is an excellent play, in an excellent edition. The Norton Critical Editions are pretty much universally loved, and for good reason - informative, detailed criticism, well-edited and presented. This is no exception. If you're a student or just a dedicated reader, this is the edition for you.

Dibs—a game that spanned over two decades between three friends. My best friends, Juls, Kat and me. It’s easy. One girl calls dibs on a guy making him off limits to the others. It’s a game of ‘what if’ and who saw the hot guy first. Honestly, the ‘dibs’ guy never panned out…yet. But it was tradition and you never screw with tradition…

I’m Dr. Samantha Williams—queen of banter, following rules and divorced from the biggest ass in ex-husband history. Fighting hard to swallow my OCD ways and get lost on a luxury cruise liner for 12 days—all for the sake of friendship. Yep, drinks and dibs!

A wedding party going on a cruise together? Come on! Get real. 12 days of torture! I’m Mac McAllister – I don’t discuss my past. I’ve never done relationships. Rules? What rules… Yet, the moment that woman walked away from me after putting me in my place, all I could think was—challenge accepted. Who did she think she was? I’ll tell you…she was a woman that slayed me with her smile and murdered me with her wit… She may not need me, but after all these years, I finally needed someone. It was her.

Mac McAllister is about to learn the rules of Dibs.

The game of Dibs is about to change.

She's a damn good writer, and all her stories are wonderful
By Jen Jen
First off, If you haven't read a Kristi Pelton series, or book. I suggest you do it. She's a damn good writer, and all her stories are wonderful.

DIBS- A game best friends play. You call "DIBS" on a guy, and your friends can't touch him. They may search for one in close proximity, but they can't touch your DIB. When witty come backs get mixed in with DIBS, it's a laugh a minute.

From the first word to the last I was hooked. I laughed non stop at the banter, and comebacks in the first three chapters, I was almost crying from laughing. As you get to know Samantha, you know that her and her 3 best friends are glued at the hip.
Becca, is sick, and has cancer, but since Sam's divorce from her wound too damn tight cheating ex-husband, Becca sets Sam up on 4 very hilarious dates. Believe me, you will laugh so hard you will cry.

Julia aka Juls, and Kat get Sam to go on a 2 week cruise. Sam needs this cruise like we all need air to breathe. Bryan her ex is just a threatening pain in the ass, and her son Jake is her life. With the push of Becca, Sam, Kat and Juls, head out on the high seas.

With OCD, and anxiety raring their ugly faces, it takes a special guy to calm her. When she claims DIBS on Mac, her the high seas will never be the same. With so many laughs, you can't help but get sucked into the book more. By the time it hits you, you have been laughing, and now, BAM you might shed a few tears, but then you are back to laughing again.

As Mac tries with everything his has to get Sam to submit to him, it takes his best friend Blake to hook up with Juls, and their friend Cody to cozy up to Kat. Mac finally gets Sam to let her guard down, and when she does, grab the lube, the vibrators, and a couple ice cubes, because there is a whole lot of rocking going on aboard that cruise ship.

I won't go into anymore details, because, you really need to read the book.
Will Sam get past Mac's profession, and open up her heart to the man she has fallen in love with on the high seas? And will Mac change his ways just to be with Sam who is a mother, and a doctor.
Climb aboard the SS SASSY PANTS (I made that up) cruise ship, and set sail with a group of friends that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer each other on. ENJOY!!

Funny, yet touches your heart.
By Amber
I started this book out laughing. Every girls bad nightmare getting out of a long relationship and every guy your friends try to hook you up with are d-bags. Samantha got out of a long relationship and her friends (Becca, Kat & Jul's) decided that going on a cruise would take her mind off things and hope she would just have fun with some guys. Right from the beginning you get Samantha's smart mouth when she is approached by a guy on the ship (who she chooses to call Thor cause of his looks as didn't catch his name.) This is when Samantha Calls dibs on him meaning his friends cant go after him always a long time joke with the girls. His real name is Mac, he is tall, Handsome and willing to give it right back to her. That is when his mission was set in place. Mac is the playboy type of guy having women throw themselves at him, she wasn't willing to surrender which made his mission to be with here. Will Sam let her guard down and let another man in to her life even just on a short trip where she never has to see him again? I smiled and couldn't get enough of this book. You will be laughing for sure, have moments of heartache and tears but most of all you will smile and just love this book. At least I did.

DIBS .... what can i say.
By Kyle
OMG forget book boyfriends i'm girl crushing on Sam a little, oh hell ok so yeah Mac is so book boy friend worthy and i'm more than a little crushing on Sam.
This book is a slight dash of 50 shades, and a whole lot of seriously sarcastic witted mouthy Sam.
Take a cruise of the islands, a woman called Sam who didn't know how to give up control add one hot Mac who knew how to melt a woman's panties and take control and what you have is an unbelievable fan balls to the wall tastic book.
Don't get me wrong, its not all about dom and sub stuff, there is some serious heart and flowers in there too. The book has to wanting to hug Sam for her anxiety then eye roll and groan at what flies out of her mouth while high fiving her for her sarcastic wit, then Mac. Oh boy the man who feeds of being challenged and loves the sarcastic stuff that comes from Sam's mouth. He's plagued with a don't fall in love its a fools game rules that he and Blake have but then the heart wants what the heart wants. Question is does Sam's heart really want what he's finally ready to offer. Oh hell yes, she does.
Sam finds herself and masters the F off and die attitude needed for her ex husband but the control to deal with losing a sister by choice, and gaining another child. Sam is amazing, love the way her character is written, described and well she just feels real. Love it. Never have i crushed on a female character but with this book i did.
Do yourself a favour and get to it already. Read it you'll love it.
