About the Author

Joao Seco is an assistant professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned his PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research, University of London. His research interests range from proton imaging and therapy to photon beam modeling Monte Carlo, electronic portal imaging, and 4D Monte Carlo proton and photon dosimetry.

Frank Verhaegen is head of clinical physics research at the Maastro Clinic. He also holds a professorship at the University of Maastricht. Dr. Verhaegen is a fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and the Institute of Physics. He earned his PhD from the University of Ghent. His research interests include imaging and dosimetry for photon and electron therapy, brachytherapy, particle therapy, and small animal radiotherapy.

"To summarize, this review has been undertaken by a user of MC techniques, but by no means an expert. This is a similar situation for a large portion of the medical physics community. MC techniques are most certainly a powerful tool for medical physicists, but a poor understanding of what happens '‘under the hood'’ can lead to erroneous results. The versatility of MC calculation platforms, designed to be modular and allow the user to perform simulations of their own design, can be detrimental if not used appropriately. I also bought this book after seeing it in UnofficialSquaw.com's G.N.A.R. movie. This book is well written, easy to understand, and even provides great pictures to help you rip up Squaw's terrain. Even if you are not planning on shredding the lines in this book; there is enough to read for everyone to be entertained. Shane McConkey's bonus chapter in the end is enough to make this book worth buying. A must for anyone who wants to see what Squaw really has to offer.

Harumi writes beautifully and every time I read her cookbooks (yes, I read em like fiction) I am instantly transported back to Japan. For some reason, she is always able to project a cool, calm and thoughtful demeanor which, honestly, takes the edge of a crazy day better than doing yoga.
Her recipes are dope, precise and reliable. I'm adicted (shhh i also have her other two books-- everyday harumi and harumi's japanese cooking)

Finally, a Japanese cookbook worth buying

At last, a really good English-language Japanese cookbook. We actually eat many of her recipes on a regular basis, because my wife uses her Japanese-language cookbooks. For what it's worth, her mom cooked professionally in Japan for 40 years and she praises Kurihara's books too. Unlike the other English-language Japanese cookbooks I've seen, she doesn't write about what might be served in restaurants, or an American image of Japanese food, but the sort of things that Japanese people actually like to eat at home. Her commentary on the food and Japanese attitudes towards it is also simple and accurate (IMHO), without any grandiose sociological claims about "Japanese culture," which is refreshing.

The best part for me? Udon, those thick, chewy noodles. I love the stuff, but we can only get it after a 2 hour drive, and it's expensive here in the US. My wife believed that it takes special flour to make, which we can't get, so even though we could eat it pretty much 365 days a year, we only had it occasionally. But Kurihara has a recipe that mixes AP and Bread flour that works! It requires some bad-ass kneading (like stomping on it for 20 minutes--literally) and it isn't quick (it is cheap, though), but they taste great. Even my wife gave it the thumbs up, which says a lot.

I saw Harumi's show on Japanese TV on my cable channel and was surprised to see she's published quite a few books. I picked this one as my first and am very pleased with the information, high quality pictures, clear and concise directions and most importantly, the fulfillment of the book's purpose: Japanese cooking made simple and fast. You cannot mess these dishes up and they are delicious.

A New Perspective for Lean: Linking Operational Excellence with Commercial Excellence

The book "Design for Operational Excellence: A Breakthrough Strategy for Business Growth" looks at lean from a new perspective. Normally companies practice lean as an open-ended journey focusing on small but continual improvements. This approach is good but slow and requires strong leadership to make sure the gains are held and sustained. Moreover, there in no defined destination where the journey should lead to; lean is not tied up with business growth.

Duggan has suggested that Operational Excellence is a well-defined destination. Operations could be designed to reach and maintain the status of excellence. This status of excellence is practically a self-healing flowing process that is extremely visual for both normal and abnormal flows. Such a visual system allows each and every employee to spot an abnormality as it happens and fix it before the flow stops. Management is now free to do offensive work to grow the business as the process is being "automatically" run at its best designed state.

Duggan has architected a well-structured step-by-step approach to design a process that will achieve and maintain operational excellence. The lean tools are still being used the same way but now with a different perspective: to grow the business.

I recommend this book to every lean thinker, practitioner and consultant.

Even though I'd heard about Operational Excellence, I bought this book because I still didn't really "get" how it was different from lean concepts we've been working with for years. But Kevin Duggan does a great job of explaining what Operational Excellence is: that it's the destination of our lean journey.

He does away with the idea of continuous improvement being a never-ending pattern of improve-sustain-improve-sustain. Instead, he asks readers to think about designing the performance of their operation to enable perpetual business growth, and then ensuring it performs according to the design specifications.

Duggan includes a detailed, step-by-step process to creating Operational Excellence that makes sense. And his examples of companies who have implemented it further supports that there should definitely be a destination to our continuous improvement efforts. That's the Operational Excellence difference.

I found Duggan's book to be a very good description of strategy and lean implementation. Lean implementation can't just be about getting better than you are today, but also should include a vision of where you are going. He does an excellent job in the book with his eleven steps of describing this. Great book and a recommended read for all lean practitioners.

Excellent resource for any new Klee Kai parent

This used to be the only and now continues to be the best of very few books on the Klee Kai. James and Alicia do a terrific job of laying out the physical characteristic requirements for the breed, socialization and behavioral tips (as well as watch outs), and the basics on how to handle the first several months of "new parenthood"-- from transporting and obedience training to brushing and potty training.

As a person who has not owned a dog before, I found this book very informative and a useful reference, in addition to my breeder over in California. This is a terrific resource for a new parent of a Klee Kai. The language is simple and easy to follow and all of the major tips are covered.

In a future edition, I would like to see:
-- Recommended food, toys, treats, crates, playpens, etc.
-- Available local resources by state or major metro area
-- More in-depth tips on obedience and crate training

Informative but not objective

When there are few books on the breed to really educate the general public about their background, their temperament, and how to locate a reputable breeder, taken at face value this one doesn't look too bad. Unfortunately where it falls short is its lack of objectivity--it's opinion is heavy and persuasive, which doesn't give much room for the reader to form their own opinions. Rather it tells you what you should think when other breeders would be quick to argue the contrary.

Indeed, it seems more like an advertisement for the author's own breeding program than an informative, factual book, given that the last chapter is completely dedicated to success stories only for this breeder--all of which laud the breeder, none of which show any owners asking questions or seeking help. The simple fact is that this breed has its flaws, every puppy is an individual and inevitably if you breed long enough, you will have puppy buyers that struggle with training or potty training and come to seek your advice. That needs to be included because breeders--and factual books about this breed--need to be upfront with the fact that if you've never had a dog before (or even if you have, no two breeds or dogs are alike), there may be certain aspects of training you will struggle with. It needs not be sugarcoated.

One other issue is the author's reliance on nurture, stressing socialization as though it's a miracle cure-all for the Alaskan Klee Kai's natural reserved instinct. MOST dogs in this breed are reserved--they are admittedly improving as breeders have been breeding for better temperaments and making socialization a core component in training their stock. That being said, many dogs will be reserved as they go through fear periods when they're a puppy. This book leads people to the mistaken belief that socialization will make your dog a prime candidate for a canine good citizenship, and while socialization is extremely important and cannot be stressed enough, potential buyers and interested parties have to be given the truth. Most of these dogs continue to be reserved, they must continue to be socialized through their fear periods, and puppy owners shouldn't get discouraged if their puppy exhibits fear behavior because it's not uncommon. We have found that with age most of our Klee Kai show vast improvement in their socialization skills but we do work hard to socialize our Klee Kai.

There are additional issues which encompass political topics within the breed that are not presented objectively. They take one side and present it as the right side.

To restate, on the whole this book is helpful--but it must be taken with a grain of salt and for what the author intends it to be. It's more of an advertisement for their program and their own personal viewpoint on the breed. It's not an objective presentation of the breed, its history, or current matters within the breed.

A sound came from the tall oak treenearest me, a thump and a cry, and then with a rattling of branches and streamof thin, drunken curses a small figure dropped from the leaves and fell in aheap at my feet. I was so startled I didn't know what to do, but wheezingunsteadily the little person staggered upright and shook its fist at the tree.

"Damned sneaky trees, always pokingout a branch when you least expect it to snag you or trip you up. Ought to turnyou into a turnip and feed you to a cow. Teach you to fuck with a fairy."

Rolf broke into a frenzy ofbarking.

"Quiet, you!" Fingers snapped andthe dog went silent.

The wizened face of a little oldwoman peered up at me from beneath the brim of a pointy hat. "You Cinderella?"she rasped.

I nodded, unable to speak. I hadjust noticed the gossamer wings poking from the back of her shabby robes.

"Good. Thought I'd never find thedamned place. You could put up a sign or something, you know. 'Cinderella lives here.' Save everyone alot of trouble."

"Who are you?" I ventured.

She coughed and spat. "I'm yourfairy godmother, that's who." She dug around in her robes and after a momenttriumphantly pulled out a battered cigar and aimed a ragged fingernail at itstip. "Bam!"

As that end flared to life, shejammed the other in her mouth and sucked on it until a cloud of smoke wreathedher face. "That's more like it. Now, where were we? Oh, yes. I'm your fairygodmother, come to help you. Your cries in the night as you suffered at thehands of your cruel and heartless stepmother and stepsisters drew me to you."

"Stepbrothers," I corrected.

"Whatever. Many a night I've heardyou crying out in anguish as they tormented you."

Those cries hadn't been anguish,and I just hoped the neighbors hadn't them as well. "I hadn't realized I wasquite so... vocal."

"Not your fault, dearie. It's myjob. I see the bastards have got you slaving through the night shift for them,too," she said, poking the sack of dirty clothes with the toe of her shoe. "Now,what can old Sibyla do for you? Want me to turn the whole damned lot of theminto newts and drop them down a well?"

"Certainly not."

I went on to explain that I wasquite happy and I loved Delise and my stepbrothers dearly. Sibyla listened,shaking her head and making sympathetic little clucking noises.

"Oh, you poor thing. It's classicStockholm Syndrome. Evil bastards have you brainwashed."

"What?"

"Never mind, dearie. Sibyla willfix things." She patted my hand absently and hiccupped. "Now, what should I...Oh, I know."

Cocking a finger at the bag ofdirty laundry at my feet, she barked out another, "Bam!"

"All clean, so you can run along tobed now, dearie. I just need to sit down and rest for a minute before I get going,myself. Probably should have skipped that last shot of akvavit. Damned stuffgoes straight to my head."

She wobbled over to the base of thetree trunk, dropped like a puppet with its strings cut, curled up, and inseconds was snoring away. I considered covering her with a blanket orsomething, but she smelled and I wasn't at all sure that she didn't have fleas.I decided the best thing to do was just to leave her alone to sleep it off, andhope none of the neighborhood dogs decided to bury her.

It is, what it is.

It is pretty clear cut. Cinderella is having an orgy at home and they love her. Prince is the bad guy and rapes her at the party. He is also jerk as afterwards hr just leaves her to go try out others. He also can't get it up ans needs something like Viagra. Worst, the sexual scenes were a let down. There was something missing to make this novel erotic. Overall not something I would read again or enjoyed at all.

Who needs a fairy godmother?

Kelli Wolfe gives the classic Cinderella story a new spin. Instead of an evil step mother and step-sisters, there is a loving step mother and very loving step brothers. The fairy godmother is a bit of a drunk, and the prince is a disgusting pervert. Will this Cinderella get her happy ending with her hot step brothers, or will she have to endure living with the sadistic prince?
