Dr. Ratay has served on and chaired several technical, review, and advisory committees and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

About the Author

�Lars Kroijer was the CEO of Holte Capital Ltd, a London-based special situations hedge fund which he founded in 2002 before returning external capital in the spring of 2008. Prior to establishing Holte Capital, Lars served in the London office of HBK Investments. In addition, he previously worked at SC Fundamental and the investment banking division of Lazard Freres in New York. Lars graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and received a MBA from Harvard Business School. He is also the author of Money Mavericks�(Pearson, 2010)

Smart people know when they are not smart

What will happen with municipal debt meltdown in China? Should I buy into gold? Will the Dollar strengthen? Should I switch out of bonds because they have had a great run?

Most people form their views on these questions from reading media like the FT where, oh right, everyone else forms their views as well.

So, If you think, or even suspect, you know the answers to these questions then you are a fool.

Lars's premise is that 99.99% of us have no insight in the financial world. Come to think of it, if we had, then we would be insiders, and thats illegal!

Therefore, Lar's says we should just:

- Track the world economy
- Minimise the tax we pay
- Minimise fee's to advisors as they eat up what little growth we get
- Minimise transaction fee's from buying and selling our investments

Take a 20 year view & do the math.

A friend recommended this to me & I actually got from the start to the finish which is a miracle! I normally get bored/confused/cynical (tick as applicable)

Read it and Reap! Successful Investing through Rationality.

This is the right book at the right time. Today, individual investors are bombarded by confusing information and contradictory indicators. The stock market is hitting new highs; yet, unemployment is high, growth is low, and the government is either helping or hurting . . . we can't tell which. Somehow, Lars Kroijer manages to make this moment approachable, through an investment framework that is totally methodical and straightforward. More importantly, it is accessible to every investor because it rests on the premise that you don't need to have an edge over the market in order to succeed in the market - so long as you create a rational investment portfolio.

Kroijer's rational investment doctrine is empowering in how it crafts simple solutions by utilizing information that is already baked into the markets and their investment vehicles - the valuations, the allocations, and all the interpretations embodied therein. In addition, execution is inexpensive and unintimidating. Kroijer also sprinkles data sources and findings throughout the book, without being overwhelming, but rather making his concepts and practices more tangible and easier to act upon.

The essence of Investing Demystified is that it provides a prism through which an individual investor can transform the chaos of the markets into a single path of clarity. For every responsible and thoughtful investor, this book is a must-read.

review of Investing Demystified

As a 20 year + city veteran, the truth hurts, most of us don't and can't even generate index returns, let alone create Alpha. Mr Kroijer nails it here! Having read Money Mavericks as well, the humble style of writing is , dare i say it, a Scandinavian trait and uber refreshing given the hubris in the industry at large. I would recommend this book to all types of investor, particularly the most dangerous ones, the ones who think they know what they are doing (strike a chord anybody ??) . I think this book is a must for any 'finance wannabees' and having interviewed Graduates for over a decade for major investment banks i would say this book is a must read before you meet a grizzly industry veteran like myself.

"Here we are on the banks of the Nueces in the grand camp of the army of occupation." So wrote Lt. Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana when in 1845, not many months before the outbreak of the Mexican War, he joined the white-tented encampment of General Zachary Taylor in Texas. And so he continued writing during the uncertain life of camp and campaign for the better part of the next two years. In these letters to his wife, published here for the first time, Dana provides a detailed, firsthand view of the United States' war with Mexico―fighting off the Mexicans from within Fort Brown during the initial attack; hearing the distant thunder of artillery as Taylor's army marched to the rescue of the beleaguered Seventh Infantry; occupying Matamoros; taking Monterrey, street by street with the defenders firing from the housetops. After Monterrey, Dana was at the siege of Veracruz and on the march to Cerro Gordo. Badly wounded in the attack on Telegraph Hill at Cerro Gordo, he was left on the field for dead, but was rescued by a burial party a day and a half later. Following the Mexican War, Dana went on to become a major general during the Civil War and later to have an illustrious career as a railroad executive. Nearly one hundred of his letters about the Mexican War survived and are now in the archives at West Point. From them Robert Ferrell has edited this vivid, eyewitness narrative.

Comprehensive, "Chapter-and-verse", in context, treatment,

This is the most useful book in my library for use in understanding the role(s) outlined by Scripture for the Holy Spirit. I have read all, and re-read portions of it over and over for about twenty years, and find it invaluable for providing understanding of Who the Spirit is, and what He does.

The primary context for the book's writing was as an extension of the author's doctoral thesis, which had focused on a Biblical examination of the tenets of 20th century Pentacostalism, as they touched upon the Holy Spirit and His role in the Christian's life. In that sense, I agree with the above reviewer Steve Cowden that it's about Baptism in the Spirit, although I would go on to say it addresses much, much more, and very well, at that.

I believe that, like me, you will find that Bruner demonstrates from the text of Scripture that the Spirit is, in fact, the Spirit "of Christ" (i.e., stamped with Christ's image, or "personality" if you will), and that it's work is about glorifying Jesus and making Him and His will known, rather than seeking to glorify Himself (i.e., the Spirit).

Furthermore, Bruner argues (successfully, in my opinion) that we are given the Spirit, NOT when we seek it, directly, but rather when we seek Christ (for instance, see his exposition of Paul's letters to the Christians in Galatia and Colossae). It's a similar principle to C.S. Lewis's "Surprised by Joy".

This book has been out of print, but I see now that Amazon is selling it again. I am going to buy another copy TODAY, because my old one is literally falling apart. [This is also one of 2-3 books I have actually bought copies of -- and they were used, when I could even find them -- to give to friends.]

Worthy of a place on your best shelf

Why did this gem of a book go unread on my shelf for decades? I started it way back when I used to use highlighters, and was probably distracted by some ministerial trauma or conflict. But I recently picked it back up, finished, and was left with a sense of satisfaction that gives Bruner's work pride of place in a fairly extensive collection of theological works.

The book is now dated, but it stands the test of time. Bruner delivers the steady, reliable and broad theological foundation of an F. F. Bruce, the felicity of expression of a Donald Carson, and the penetrating insight of a Robert Alter. Bruner stands among the tall theologians. The datedness of the book only shows for lack of benefit offered in the New Perspective on Paul (NPP). The shadow of Luther still looms over sections of the book, but this does not detract in the least from the two major contributions of the work. And, in terms of history of interpretation, there is a certain charm to the interactions with the theologians of a bygone day: Bultmann, Beasley-Murray, Lampe, and Schnackenburg, to name a few.

The first major contribution is the explanation of Pentecostalism: history, beliefs, and interpretive strategies. As an outsider to the movement, I found it most interesting to understand why Pentecostals would insist on tongue-speaking as THE essential mark of a true Christian. Bruner lays it all out with citations from key figures in the charismatic movement that was peaking in the decade after he wrote (1970). I am guessing the movement is in decline now, and that may owe a great deal to the errors and missteps set forth here. This book demolishes the foundation of Pentecostalism--big hammers, dynamite, wrecking balls, wood chippers. With the Biblical foundations denied, Pentecostals may carry on business as usual only on the basis of tremendous chutzpah. With Bruner, in its classical form, it is over.

The second major contribution is the exposition of key biblical texts relating to the Holy Spirit. Incredible for his day, Bruner upholds baptism as a salvific event and insists that this is the place where the Spirit is recieved (see also G. R. Beasley-Murray). With the breaking of the NPP, and the shedding of Light where Luther's shadow once covered, the salvific role of baptism is being recovered. The texts are handled expertly and mined for authentic meaning. You will read Bruner and walk away convinced, perhaps contrary to the views you had brought to the encounter. You may well be changed. But you will know that you have grasped an understanding of God that is truer, more Biblical, and ultimately more helpful to grasping authentic Christianity.

If the Spirit is recieved in baptism, there is no waiting for a "second experience" to finish the transaction. The calm reception in baptism, of course, will not carry the flash and bang of Pentecostal expectations of a separate "Spirit baptism." But Bruner will demonstrate that this opens the way to a more meaningful and reasonable experience of a Christian walk that allows suffereing and hardship, and is less than total triumphalism. And, he will insist that here--rather than in a charismatic revival meeting--is where the Spirit is truly at work. This exposition makes sense both of the narrative of Acts and the experience of the often-struggling apostle, Paul. I should add that Bruner's treatment of 2 Corinthians is positively outstanding and soul-satisfying!

So, Bruner leaves a lot of room for the Spirit to act among non-Pentecostals while offering a sober challenge to the excessive and often bizarre claims from charismatics. He shifts the criteria from what the Spirit might do for "ME" to what the Spirit of Christ might do for "OTHERS" in mission and evangelistic outreach and in building the body of Christ. This book may take away your boast, but it will fill you with the humble comfort that is at place in Biblical Christianity.

Finally, I might suggest a good fit with Bruner's book with those who connect with the preaching and writing of Francis Chan (author of "Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit"). See the sermon video at [...]. If you have a bookshelf reserved for the real cream in your thelogical library, Bruner's "A Theology of the Holy Spirit" will find a place on the top shelf.

Perhaps He Should Have

I read this book some years ago and found it to be one of the best on its (actual) subject: Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The author is calm, clear, sympathetic and thoughtful. He is clearly in touch with the subject matter both historically and biblically. Though he does not deal with the manifestations of the latest BHS movements this does not detract from the book. The biblical principles addressed are timeless.

IMO, the former reviewer is typical of people trying to address issues beyond their ability or maturity. I fail to understand why he/she thought that giving a surface review of a book (especially after acknowledging that little effort was given to even read the book) would be helpful to anyone or be fair to the author. I wish Amazon would let us somehow drop these kinds of frivolous, immature and misleading reviews.

This book is strictly vegan and raw food diet. It can be done with full commitment... it's informative but might be to much for some.

Valuable Information

This book provides valuable information and it is a quick easy read. This is not an easy diet to follow but it does work. I believe it is because you start eating nourishing whole foods and avoid processed garbage that may be cluttering your system and preventing you from getting better. The issue with not eating meat is controversial but even if you don't believe in it long-term, when your body rests from digesting heavy foods like animal protein, it has more of an opportunity to work on healing. It is incredible how after just 2 days of following the diet, my inflammation and pain goes down considerably and as soon as I start on my old habits, the pain returns. This is a challenge for me but I plan to continue eating this way until my body heals and I am off prednisone, then I will probably introduce wild caught salmon and occassional grass-fed beef and organic meats very sparingly. All you can do is make it work for you. This is an infinitely better way to try to manage an autoimmune disease than being on damaging steroids and immunosuppressive drugs.
