Comprehensive, "Chapter-and-verse", in context, treatment,

This is the most useful book in my library for use in understanding the role(s) outlined by Scripture for the Holy Spirit. I have read all, and re-read portions of it over and over for about twenty years, and find it invaluable for providing understanding of Who the Spirit is, and what He does.
The primary context for the book's writing was as an extension of the author's doctoral thesis, which had focused on a Biblical examination of the tenets of 20th century Pentacostalism, as they touched upon the Holy Spirit and His role in the Christian's life. In that sense, I agree with the above reviewer Steve Cowden that it's about Baptism in the Spirit, although I would go on to say it addresses much, much more, and very well, at that.
I believe that, like me, you will find that Bruner demonstrates from the text of Scripture that the Spirit is, in fact, the Spirit "of Christ" (i.e., stamped with Christ's image, or "personality" if you will), and that it's work is about glorifying Jesus and making Him and His will known, rather than seeking to glorify Himself (i.e., the Spirit).
Furthermore, Bruner argues (successfully, in my opinion) that we are given the Spirit, NOT when we seek it, directly, but rather when we seek Christ (for instance, see his exposition of Paul's letters to the Christians in Galatia and Colossae). It's a similar principle to C.S. Lewis's "Surprised by Joy".
This book has been out of print, but I see now that Amazon is selling it again. I am going to buy another copy TODAY, because my old one is literally falling apart. [This is also one of 2-3 books I have actually bought copies of -- and they were used, when I could even find them -- to give to friends.]

Worthy of a place on your best shelf

Why did this gem of a book go unread on my shelf for decades? I started it way back when I used to use highlighters, and was probably distracted by some ministerial trauma or conflict. But I recently picked it back up, finished, and was left with a sense of satisfaction that gives Bruner's work pride of place in a fairly extensive collection of theological works.
The book is now dated, but it stands the test of time. Bruner delivers the steady, reliable and broad theological foundation of an F. F. Bruce, the felicity of expression of a Donald Carson, and the penetrating insight of a Robert Alter. Bruner stands among the tall theologians. The datedness of the book only shows for lack of benefit offered in the New Perspective on Paul (NPP). The shadow of Luther still looms over sections of the book, but this does not detract in the least from the two major contributions of the work. And, in terms of history of interpretation, there is a certain charm to the interactions with the theologians of a bygone day: Bultmann, Beasley-Murray, Lampe, and Schnackenburg, to name a few.
The first major contribution is the explanation of Pentecostalism: history, beliefs, and interpretive strategies. As an outsider to the movement, I found it most interesting to understand why Pentecostals would insist on tongue-speaking as THE essential mark of a true Christian. Bruner lays it all out with citations from key figures in the charismatic movement that was peaking in the decade after he wrote (1970). I am guessing the movement is in decline now, and that may owe a great deal to the errors and missteps set forth here. This book demolishes the foundation of Pentecostalism--big hammers, dynamite, wrecking balls, wood chippers. With the Biblical foundations denied, Pentecostals may carry on business as usual only on the basis of tremendous chutzpah. With Bruner, in its classical form, it is over.
The second major contribution is the exposition of key biblical texts relating to the Holy Spirit. Incredible for his day, Bruner upholds baptism as a salvific event and insists that this is the place where the Spirit is recieved (see also G. R. Beasley-Murray). With the breaking of the NPP, and the shedding of Light where Luther's shadow once covered, the salvific role of baptism is being recovered. The texts are handled expertly and mined for authentic meaning. You will read Bruner and walk away convinced, perhaps contrary to the views you had brought to the encounter. You may well be changed. But you will know that you have grasped an understanding of God that is truer, more Biblical, and ultimately more helpful to grasping authentic Christianity.
If the Spirit is recieved in baptism, there is no waiting for a "second experience" to finish the transaction. The calm reception in baptism, of course, will not carry the flash and bang of Pentecostal expectations of a separate "Spirit baptism." But Bruner will demonstrate that this opens the way to a more meaningful and reasonable experience of a Christian walk that allows suffereing and hardship, and is less than total triumphalism. And, he will insist that here--rather than in a charismatic revival meeting--is where the Spirit is truly at work. This exposition makes sense both of the narrative of Acts and the experience of the often-struggling apostle, Paul. I should add that Bruner's treatment of 2 Corinthians is positively outstanding and soul-satisfying!
So, Bruner leaves a lot of room for the Spirit to act among non-Pentecostals while offering a sober challenge to the excessive and often bizarre claims from charismatics. He shifts the criteria from what the Spirit might do for "ME" to what the Spirit of Christ might do for "OTHERS" in mission and evangelistic outreach and in building the body of Christ. This book may take away your boast, but it will fill you with the humble comfort that is at place in Biblical Christianity.
Finally, I might suggest a good fit with Bruner's book with those who connect with the preaching and writing of Francis Chan (author of "Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit"). See the sermon video at [...]. If you have a bookshelf reserved for the real cream in your thelogical library, Bruner's "A Theology of the Holy Spirit" will find a place on the top shelf.

Perhaps He Should Have

I read this book some years ago and found it to be one of the best on its (actual) subject: Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The author is calm, clear, sympathetic and thoughtful. He is clearly in touch with the subject matter both historically and biblically. Though he does not deal with the manifestations of the latest BHS movements this does not detract from the book. The biblical principles addressed are timeless.
IMO, the former reviewer is typical of people trying to address issues beyond their ability or maturity. I fail to understand why he/she thought that giving a surface review of a book (especially after acknowledging that little effort was given to even read the book) would be helpful to anyone or be fair to the author. I wish Amazon would let us somehow drop these kinds of frivolous, immature and misleading reviews.
