Concise and thorough intro to relational database concepts

This book is ideal for those of us who need to refresh knowledge and skills of relational databases that may have been unused for a few years, or for people who need to understand relational database concepts in a hurry.
It starts with concepts that are essential to understanding relational databases, then introduces you to SQL. If you are working with Oracle you will find that standard SQL and Oracle's SQL*Plus are quite different in that SQL*Plus has a richer set of verbs. Regardless, the intro to SQL is valuable and it provides you with the ability to write queries for real world needs. The examples will work with DB2, Oracle of any other database that will understand standard SQL, making this book product-independent and invaluable.
The sections that I especially liked covered normalization and entity-relationship models. These are basic knowledge factors that are essential to understanding relational databases, and are the heart and soul of the book.
This book's value is that it's straightforward and presents a lot of material in a short number of pages. It is not for non-technical people in my opinion because the writing is sparse and terse. However, if you have an understanding of data or want a fast refresh this book will save you time by cutting through the fluff.

Typos and omissions

This text is littered with typos. The narrative is dry and difficult to read; the authors seem to walk all over themselves trying to over-explain things rather than just taking the time to find the most concise and understandable way to say them. They use nonstandard symbols in their technical descriptions, and some symbols are simply not explained at all.

I am not very impressed with this book. I am basically skimming through it to pick up the basic concepts and I will explore them on my own without the help of this book.

A very broad & not very useful overview

This outline is to broad and too shallow to be that useful. The outline tries to cover SQL, database theory, functional dependencies, normalization, database security, the entity relationship model, and throw in an MS Access example screen every now and then - all in just 250 brief pages. I hate to give the book two stars, because that usually indicates a book is pretty useless, but I feel I'd be a little too kind in giving it three stars too. My advice is to go with an introductory book like "Databases Demystified", and then get a book dedicated to SQL and learn that language separately. I prefer "Learning SQL", published by O'Reilly and Associates. If you want more advanced material on database theory after that, C.J. Date's book, "An Introduction to Database Systems", is a good one.

...and it works as a memoir, too!

Arthur Koestler's memoir about his experiences during the beginning of the Second World War is interesting from a historical standpoint. Koestler finds himself all over Europe, in and out of internment camps, encountering people from all over of all classes. Koestler's experience is interesting because the way he was treated was not the norm, it was the product of his unique background and situation, but it still represents the wide range of possible experiences during this historically uncertain time. The level that it succeeds on most, however, is a personal one. Koestler is a damn witty, talented author, who knows how to tell a story. Despite the subject matter he finds much work with. One can't help but smile at he way he describes the inbreed locals of a small village or the way he personifies his car. As interesting as the historical and stylistic elements is his description of himself (clearly a flawed man with a drinking problem) and his unlikely relationship with a younger woman he wasn't meant to end up with. It may be a comparatively obscure piece of literature, but it's certainly one worth reading.

The France-1940 as a true image of the World-2013.

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

ONE of the greatest books to come out of the second world war now carries a tragic irony. The reverberations of its author's suicide in 1983 spill over into one's reading of it.

In 1939, Koestler was living in the South of France working on Darkness At Noon. Moving to Paris to enlist with the Allies he was, along with thousands of others who had fought Fascism around Europe, imprisoned as an undesirable alien. Life in the camp, which German emigres testified to being comparable with Dachau, is illuminated by a writer whose humanity, optimism and intelligence shine on every page.

There are plenty of books with beautiful color illustrations that try to explain basic computer technology, but they do so at the expense of helping you solve real laptop problems.

Two final notes about using this workbook. First, if your laptop is in warranty, it doesn't make any sense to take it apart in hopes of fixing something yourself. This book can still help you troubleshoot the problem to determine if it's a software setting or incorrect use, which may save you sending the laptop out for repair. Second, feel free to cut out the twelve flowcharts in the second half of the book and staple them together. This will save on page flipping as you read the expanded explanations of the decision symbols. It's a workbook, not English literature.

The first part provides an introduction to pathogenic bacteria and sampling techniques and an overview of the rapid microbiological methods.

The second part describes the different transducers used for the detection of bacteria. intelligent and strong…with a sailor’s vocabulary

This book was definitely not what I was expecting. The synopsis describes a story following Cleo, who is “beautiful, rich, intelligent, and strong…with a sailor’s vocabulary, a fine set of lock picks, and a few million in the bank, Cleo always gets what she wants”. TBH, I think I read this book because it was recommended. If it was just based on the synopsis, I probably would have passed. However, this book is much more interesting and has more depth than what could have imagined.

Cleo grew up with neglectful parents, simply because they are in their own intellectual world and forget that they have a child. Instead of protecting her by picking her up when she falls, they try protect her by teaching her observational methods so that she’ll observe something before she has a chance to trip over it. In a way, while they neglect her, they teach her to neglect the world around her by being focused on observing rather than participating — everything becomes a social experiment. Her childhood leads up to her being too intelligent, without any social/interpersonal awareness, making her “weird”.

The weirdness is not only her – A lot of this book is weird (get it? right?)- she finds herself in nonsensical situations and reacts to it in pretty strange ways but I think that’s what makes it fun. Yet, her reactions are exactly what you expect from her. Put a curious, too-intelligent girl in strange situations and see her come out on top.

You also see this deep seated need to connect to someone. Where her parents had each other, Cleo had no one. So it’s no surprise when she makes connections with totally inappropriate people, and also hunts down a person from her past who she does have a connection to.

Half of the book takes place while Cleo is still in high school. However, although it’s set in a high school and she’s young, the character is so mature and the situations she faces are a little older so you’re not reading high school drivel of “OMG! He’s soooo cute!! :P ;)”.

I thought it would be creepy when the reader is introduced to Jackson, while he’s a grown adult and she’s 10, and you realize, oh dear, they’re going to get together. Even more irksome is that he knows how intelligent she is and uses her as a pawn in his game – he grows fond of her (not in a creepy way) but almost a “I feel bad I’m using you so I’ll be nice and friendly so I don’t feel as bad” while you ultimately wonder if he views her as just a tool for his ultimate goal. This sort of attitude toward her made me feel a lot less creepy about the situation. So he disappears when he finally achieves his goal (thanks to her) and doesn’t reappear until she’s an adult and it’s because she’s looking for him. The romance doesn’t factor in until much much later in the story (because, um, age) and even then, when it starts creeping in and things begin changing – I still felt like he was hesitating and thought “Oh boy, just give in”.

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it. Not much romance until really the last 10% of the story – but I loved this heroine and her quirks. I kept thinking, this author must have a degree in psychology. Then, I find out, her next book is about a psychologist! I felt validated when I saw that one.

On a side note: What got me chuckling was that Mae McCall (author) introduced a high school nemesis named Mae. Wonder what was going through the author’s mind there.

Oh my gosh Weird Girl was incredibly brilliant from beginning to the end it keeps you so entranced you'll be surprised and sad when you get to the end it will make you laugh, cry and just have people looking at you like your a loon so definitely read Weird Girl inside away from people(my family already knows I'm a loon).Anyhow you should definitely read Weird Girl by Mae McCall she did a wonderful job and I can't wait to read more books by her because this one was so good
