About the Author
Eve S. Buzawa is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester as well as her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the School of Criminal Justice, Michigan State University. She has authored and edited numerous books and monographs. Recent publications include Violence Against Women in Families and Relationships: Making and Breaking Connections, a four-volume set (co-edited with Evan Stark, 2009). Professor Buzawa has also served as a principal investigator on several federally funded research projects and has directed numerous state-funded research and training projects. She is past president of the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology, past president of the Northeast Association of Criminal Justice Sciences, and past board member for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Carl G. Buzawa is an attorney in private practice. Currently, he is Senior Vice President―Contracts, Legal, and Compliance at Textron Systems. He received his BA from the University of Rochester, his MA from the University of Michigan, and his JD from Harvard Law School. With Eve S. Buzawa, he is the coauthor of numerous books and articles on the topic of domestic violence.

Evan Stark is a sociologist, forensic social worker and award-winning researcher with an international reputation for his innovative work on the legal, policy and health dimensions of interpersonal violence, including its effects on children. Dr. Stark’s award-winning book, Coercive Control: The Entrapment of Women in Personal Life (Oxford, 2007),�was named the outstanding social science book published in 2007 by the Association of American Publishers and influenced the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe to expand their definitions of domestic violence to include coercive control.� With a Ph.D......University, he is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University where he held appointments in Public Affairs, Public Health and Women and Gender Studies.�Dr. Stark has held visiting appointments and Fellowships at�the�University of Essex,� the University of Bristol,� the��Escuela Superior de Econom�a y Negocios (ESEN) in El Salvador and, most recently, as the. Leverhulme Visiting Professor�at the University of Edinburgh.� Since his retirement, Dr. Stark has done extensive work on imporiving the response to abuse women in Turkey, as part of the�State Department's "U.S. Speaker and Specialist Program" as well as in Serbia, Taiwan and�throughout the United Kingdom.�

Clear and comprehensive

I had to read this book for a graduate class. It is one of the clearest and more comprehensive textbooks I have read. The authors present an amazing amount of material in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner. If you're looking for a book to cover domestic violence and the response, this is it.

I purchased this book for use in a college Domestic Violence class and the book was full of statistics rather than information about violence. SO it depends on what the book is needed for whether it will be helpful. Personally, I was not a fan. It was shipped and delivered on time and was in great condition! 2 Thumbs up to the seller!

Most books for fantasy writers blend that genre with sf, but this work is an exception. Unfortunately, the entire first chapter (of 12) is devoted to "Pottermania," including "Eight Reasons Why Harry Is a Success," and a large amount of space is devoted (although more deservedly so) to J.R.R. Tolkien. The book offers little concrete instruction for writers, the most practical advice being found in five pages of the final chapter ("Submitting Your Work for Publication"); otherwise, most instruction is done by pointing to passages by successful authors. Included are such masters of fantasy literature as C.S. Lewis, Ursula Le Guin, and T.H. White, as well as peripherally related writers like Joseph Campbell and nongenre writers like John Steinbeck. This admittedly "inclusive" and "nonacademic" approach is overly generous at times. The slim volume doesn't dally with any one work, with the exception of Harry Potter, and can give the impression of rush and disorder; but the ten interviews with prominent fantasy writers do offer valuable insights. This guide provides a decent overview of an overlooked genre until a more thorough and organized treatment comes along. The zen of writing fantasy literature

I was expecting much more of a nuts and bolts book on writing fantasy, but a lot of the material in the book seemed targeted toward having a better appreciation of fantasy or what's required to write it, rather than the actual mechanics of writing. I enjoyed reading the book anyway, but it was not entirely what I had expected. The first part of the book introduced the concept of fantasy literature. I found Chapter 1, which analyzed the popularity of the Harry Potter series, to be very interesting. Chapter 2 introduced the general concept of fantasy literature and Chapter 3 categorized fantasy literature into five types with an accompanying essay or interview for each type. Although interesting, Chapter 3 was probably the weakest section of the book. The interviews, often about a single book the author wrote, were not the most effective means for conveying information. The second part of the book addressed the story itself. Chapter 4 discussed character development and was fairly informative, although like most of the book about a third to a half of the material are passage quotations from fantasy books. The two contributed portions of this chapter were not as informative as the material written by the author. Chapter 5 was similar in content and quality, but addressed places rather than characters. Chapter 6 discussed common themes often found in fantasy-such as magic, riddles, and prophecies-and also included two author interviews. Chapter 7 addressed plot and common story lines in fantasy literature and also included an interview and contributed article. The third part of the book addressed many of the mechanics of the writing process. Chapter 8 discussed generated ideas; Chapter 9 discussed the mechanics of the layout and order of which chapters to write first; Chapter 10 discussed how to set goals and remain motivated in the writing process; Chapter 11 discussed revising material; and Chapter 12 discussed submitting your work for publication. This last chapter was the only one in this part that included contributed material. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Terry Pratchett and the article by Ray Bradbury. The fourth part of the book included some reference material: publisher addresses and web/print references. Overall, as a 'How To' book for writers I give this book four stars. While all of the material was interesting, the usefulness of it was uneven. Betters books are "Worlds of Wonder" by David Gerrold or "How To Write Science Fiction & Fantasy" by Orson Scott Card. However, if you love fantasy and just want a better appreciation of what goes into writing it, then this book is definitely five stars.

Superb Presentation of Current Epigenetic Understanding in Cancers

The book on Epigenetic Cancer Therapy is edited by Gray and is a well-organized compendium of current understanding of the epigenetic factors associated with a variety of cancers. The definition of epigenetic factors has seen a limited scope, such as methylation only, and a broader scope including miRNAs and lncRNAs and other factors as well. The book uses the latter which I have also been more comfortable with as well. Thus miRNAs are epigenetic factors.

The book is a classic multi-author work where each Chapter is prepared by a person or persons well versed in that specific area. The book is primarily for those who already had a reasonable proficiency in many of the areas and are seeking either an expanded view into other areas or depth in the area in which they focus.

The book is divided into five major parts.

Part 1 details much of the scientific background necessary to understand epigenetic factors. This is a now somewhat well understood overview of the basic scientific understanding of epigenetic elements. It covers methylation, histone acetylation, miRNAs, lncRNAs and a variety of other processes. If one has seen some of this previously it is a good overview. If however you are approaching this for the first time this may be a bit too little and a bit too much. The Chapter on methylation is excellent and generally up to date. Methylation on AT nucleotides has recently been observed but its clinical significance is still little understood. The Histone Code could have been presented but that is a nit. Discussions on testing for methylated locations could also have been a bit more detailed but again that is a Lab technique and may have little direct clinical appear. The miRNA chapter is reasonable. I would have liked a more complete and even discussion of DROSHA and DICER but again this is clinical. Finally the lncRNA discussion is quite relevant across a broad base of cancers.

Part 2 discusses applications across a good cross section of cancers. My focus has been melanoma, prostate and MDS so I will focus my attention there. There is an extensive discussion on neurological neoplasia as well as head, neck and throat. Chapter 11 is on prostate cancer. This has been found to be a complex cancer with many genomic presentations. On p 235 the author states “PCa has an unusually low mutation frequency”. I may not fully agree with this but the data is not in. It is however a cancer where methylation plays a role, especially when looking at a putative precursor, HGPIN. The author also presents a short but useful discussion on acetylation as well (p242). The Tables are quite comprehensive and useful as well as current. The other Chapters in this Part seem likewise.

Chapter 8 on hematological cancers is also quite useful. The most interesting case of current study is MDS, which is a methylation result. IN fact hypomethylation therapeutics such as azacitidine is discussed. These drugs have been used in MDS and show some positive value for a year or so but ultimately they fail and AML may occur unless a stem cell transplant is performed. One of the concerns with these therapeutics is their long term system effects. On pp 171-176 there is a good discussion of their identification and evolution. However we may still not really understand their systemic effects.

Part 3 discusses dietary and emerging therapeutic approaches. It also covers several Clinical Trials.

Part 4 examines what they call; Issues and Areas of Concern. Chapter 24 is especially critical. Simply it focuses on Intra Tumor Heterogeneity (ITH). Namely in tumor samples each cell may have a unique genetic activation, and generally there are controlling ones and many followers. We see this for example on PCa. Almost weekly we see some new gene argued for its importance. In reality it may be an inconsequential artifact of some controlling gene not even in the cell we are testing. The ultimate challenge with be cell by cell assessment and profiling in cancers. However the discussion is this Chapter should be read by all who are interested. Chapter 27 is a nice adjunct to the previously discussed Chapter. Here they discuss the therapeutic targeting of cancer stem cells, CSC. This Chapter is worth the read as well.

Part 5 discusses several future directions Specifically in Chapter 29 (pp 687-688) there is a discussion of targeting. Specifically they examine MDM2 as a target to control p53. This is a potentially exciting area. However as we have seen many times once a target is effected we all too often see a new path arise. We now have $100,000 plus treatments that are good for six months. Personalized design is a process; it is an ongoing effort to see what is changing and what new targets are useful.

Overall this is a superb coverage of epigenetics and cancers. It may not cover every niches but it is more than representative. My only negative is the overly small print on the Figures. I have seen this before with this publisher. You may need a lens to read anything on many of the Figures.

About the Author
E. B. White (1899-1985) was an American author and long-time contributor to the New Yorker. He was the author of more than seventeen books of prose and poetry and coauthor of the English language style guide The Elements of Style but is especially well-known for his beloved children's classics, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1973. He won numerous other awards and medals, including a special Pulitzer Prize for his body of work in 1978 and the 1971 National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, which commended him for making ''a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.''

A fascinating look at the greatest city

E.B. White was a very accomplished writer. His books and essays are some the best literature we have. His short book "Here Is New York" provides a good example of his gift as a generator of beautiful prose. He wrote this piece in 1948 and as the writer of the introduction, Roger Angell states White confronts the task with the knowledge that what he writes at his time will not endure because the city is ever changing metropolis. White likes to write with a heavy use of metaphor and he constantly anthropomorphizing what the city of New York has to offer us. He speaks of three basic types of individuals who spend their day in the city: the commuter who never really gets to know the city, the native individual who takes the city for granted and the ones who move in later in life who are in love with the city and enthralled with it's bill of fare. I enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to hear him speak of the boroughs that have evolved with the city. If he were to write the essay today I think he would be dismayed by the further disappearance of the places that he cherished and yet he would continue to express the belief that it is the greatest city in the world.

Not a book, but a good essay

As a New Yorker who grew up there in the 70's the essay is a fine piece, but this is NOT a book. It is a magazine article at best. Unless you want it for your bookshelf, and it will be lost among thicker volumes, you can just as easily find the text online or in your library.

Style, Truth, Prescience

Early to a party, I was looking at a friend's bookcase and pulled this slim volume from a shelf. After reading the first sentence, I knew I had to have it.

Originally published in 1949, E.B. White, who no longer lived in New York City, captured the soul and spirit of the place. Nothing has changed. At the time, the United Nations building was under construction, and the bombing of London was fresh in his mind. He ends the book with a vision that perfectly balances hope with danger, in words prescient of September 11 - I re-read those paragraphs on every anniversary, it has become my ritual.

But what originally drew me to the book is not only the truth and insight of White, but his style, his felicity of expression. The author of "The Elements of Style" certainly knew the rules, and knew when to break them, as well. The second paragraph ends with a run-on sentence 198 words long, a thrilling joy ride which itself demonstrates how impossible it is to capture, in prose, the enormity and importance of this city.

I agree with Russell Baker, this is "the finest portrait ever painted of the city."

truly excellent work!

I recommend this book to everyone. I only want to say that the other reviews here give away some things from the book that you really ought to discover on your own, at the time that the authors planned for you to do. If you can, just take my word for it and read this book, read only the next review by a reader from Nashville, the others disclose too much. Of the great many sides of this excellent book is its enigma, it is a great detective story in a way where you're on the mission, along with the central character, to understand what's going on there. So it has action in it, it has philosophy, it deals with morals, freedom, responsibility. And it's full of imagination and unique perspective. After you've read the book, you can come back here and read the reviews, they're very good.

Timeless classic

An excellent book for all times, cultures, and societies, "Prisoners of Power" (the original is called "The Inhabited Island") is about every person's right to be free and about the responsibilities that come with freedom. A hero from Utopian society finds himself in the world where he is nearly a Superman, but in this world he doesn't know the difference between good and evil, and a mistake in judgement can cost him more than his own life. This is one of my favorite books. Unfortunately, the English translation misses some finer points of the book. I can only hope that with the new version of the book, where the authors restored the changes made (I should say inflicted) by the Soviet censorship, English-speaking readers will get a translation that's closer to the spirit of the original.

PRISONERS OF POWER

I was Strugatsky reader since I was 9. And as a child, I discovered an interesting thing: authors use a fantastic factor to describe a fenomenon present in the everyday environment. Being marooned on the "Inhabited Island"(original title), like the chief character of this marvelous book, I can state under oath that an "irradiation" they invented in the contemporary society is rather irrelevant: people turn into robots all by themselves. Read this book and look around,- you won't regret it.
