Needed a case study approach for Ora Fin. A long way to go.

Oracle Financials implementation is not a trivial task. It is a major cost for any organizations' IT department. This books tries to break the ice on Oracle Finacials compiled information. It is the only book that exists in the field of Oracle Financials. The enormity of this tasks makes it impossible to club all the knowledge one would expect from a handbook. However, it does try to be insightful for ar modules as opposed to explanation of other modules. It is the courage of the authors to delve on such an elusive topic that deserves a special mention. What we need for an implementation is case studies with very particular code specific to that situation. I guess for each module in Oracle finacials one could write a book and that is what is required. Or if we try to slice and dice it from different perspective. Let us assume we try to categorize it from Industry line perspective. One for Energy kind of industry, one for production kind of industry, and so on the classification will become endless what is required is the process identification in a business ( for instance invoicing, billing) and then trying to explain the best practices and implementation for that process. The purpose of this book is introduction to Financials and a brief outlook at each module and project management. I think we need a module-detailed book with processes implementation.

Worth Reading Once

I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !

Mark Sundeen is an award-winning writer whose nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, and The Believer. He is the author of Car Camping (HarperCollins, 2000) and The Making of Toro (Simon & Schuster, 2003), and co-author of North by Northwestern (St. Martin's, 2010), which was a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He has taught fiction and nonfiction in the MFA programs at the University of New Mexico and Western Connecticut State University. He lives in Montana and Utah.

Don't get bogged down in the title

First off, this is not a survivalist book or story. It is the life story of one man and his experiences told through the eyes and experiences of the author, other people the author interviewed and from the writings of the subject himself.

It starts with him living without money but almost immediately becomes a tale of how he got to that point in his life - his mental thoughts and travels and various attempts to become one who can live moneyless.

Although he himself quits money his entire story is one of a person living off of the largess of money and what it can and does buy - basically the excess of capitalism, without which he would not have been able to do what he has.

Keep in mind that this is not a "formula to" book. The reality is his story is one of lifestyle choice. One can chose to live a life of less income or pursue one of more income. The reality is the lifestyle(s) that go with those varying degrees of income are the output, some may say consequences, of those choices.

Towards the end the author gets into the typical platitudes that predict things like peak oil and the downfall of the American capitalistic system, citing specific occurrences that never resulted in the social impact the author predicts.

As for the writing I found it moved the story along - in the beginning slowly, the main part of the book at a nice pace, with the ending slowed down again. The author did a good job keeping things interesting but quite often I felt like he was either overdramatizing the incidents or relating stories that the subject presented without questioning their authenticity or degree of reality (especially the religious moments).

This is a man who sought AND FOUND a place where he could live in relative happiness and freedom - without hurting anyone else. This is truly heroic.

Fascinating and well written.

This is a well-written biography of a man that decided to live his convictions. Much of the book is about how he arrived at his choice to give up money. I found the book just fascinating and thought provoking.

"Vita Merlini, or The Life of Merlin, is a work by Geoffrey of Monmouth composed in Latin around AD 1150. It retells incidents from the life of the Brython Merlin, and is based on traditional material about the character.

Merlin is referred to as a prophet, king and law-giver in the text. There are multiple episodes in which he losing his mind and lives in the wilderness like a wild animal, similar to Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel. It is also the first work to describe the Arthurian sorceress Morgan le Fay, as Morgen.

Geoffrey had dealt with Merlin in his two previous works, the Prophetiae Merlini, purported to be a series of prophecies from the sage, and the Historia Regum Britanniae, which is the first work presenting a link between Merlin and King Arthur. The Vita Merlini presents an account of Merlin much more faithful to the Welsh traditions of Myrddin Wyllt, the archetype behind Geoffrey's composite figure of Merlin. Whereas the Historia had Merlin associating with Arthur, his father Uther Pendragon, and his uncle Aurelius Ambrosius in the 5th century, the Vita's timeframe is during the late 6th century, and includes references to various figures from that period, including Gwenddoleu ap Ceidio and Taliesin. Geoffrey attempts to synchronize the the Vita with his earlier work by having Merlin mention he had been with Arthur long before." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

"Geoffrey of Monmouth (Welsh: Gruffudd ap Arthur or Sieffre o Fynwy) (c. 1100 - c. 1155) was a clergyman and one of the major figures in the development of British history and the popularity of tales of King Arthur. Most of his work is romanticized historical fiction with very little factual merit.

Geoffrey's birthplace is unknown, but he may have been born in Monmouth in Wales, possibly of Breton ancestry. Certainly he had significant connections to Monmouth, as his name suggests, and the descriptions of Caerleon in Historia Regum Britanniae indicate familiarity with the area. He studied at Oxford University, where he met Walter, who was Archdeacon of Oxford. On 21 February 1152 Archbishop Theobald consecrated Geoffrey as bishop of St Asaph, having ordained him a priest 10 days before. "There is no evidence that he ever visited his see," writes Lewis Thorpe, "and indeed the wars of Owain Gwynedd make this most unlikely." Geoffrey attested about six different charters between the years 1129 and 1151; the date of his death is recorded in the Welsh Chronicles." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

The above review mentions that the text jumps for no reason to a web design section and then goes back to Vita Merlini. The reason is these print on demand reprints that are trashing the book trade are printed on automatic pilot.I am sure they have no clue they accidently switched programs in the middle of printing.This publisher has the damn nerve to copyright a book he stole and does not give even credit or even mention the author John Parry!These people should stick to selling gold on television and stay the hell out of the noble book trade. Do you agree?
