GREAT INTRO REFERENCE TO SIMPLE AND COMPLEX MATH

This is almost a sequel to Innumeracy in which Paulos goes beyond the simple exposition of people's difficulties with math to teach, in a very readable fashion, to main concepts of mathematics, be it simple high school, college, or even the complex research mathematics.

The nice thing about this book is that you can read it bit by bit, since each chapter that deals with a topic is about 3-5 pages long, so you won't get bored and if you don't understand one topic you can move on to the next one. The topics are not really connected, so one can just move on to somehting one finds more interesting.

Overall, I believe I now know what many of the complex topics like chaos theory are about. Enough for a cocktail conversation with a mathematician at least.

one of the few great mathematics books.

I was captured entirely by "innumaracy", so i dwelve deeper into John Allen Paulo works, his website and other books, and i manage to buy several of the books.
I particularly like beyond numeracy. It is not as easily read as innumeracy, but it is deeper and more insightful.
It is written in loose shorter essays focusing on special mathematic things. I love the explanation of "infinity", "chaos theory", "pi", "probability" etc. I think people interested slightly in mathematics will be enchanted and enjoying the book.
Some of the essays are only sweet writing words, some contain heavy formula that needs digestions and basic math understanding.
There are about 70 short essays in all that can be read independently at leasure. I found out i strted to get dizzy after reading 10 essays in a straight reading.
John proved that you can make dry stuff interesting, and if you read some of the materials and use if for conversation, it will makes you look like a whiz with great taste! that is one additional benefit of reading! and you will do it without the usual pain. ;-)

After defining an ontology as a representation of the types of entities in a given domain, the book distinguishes between different kinds of ontologies and taxonomies, and shows how applied ontology draws on more traditional ideas from metaphysics. It presents the core features of the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), now used by over one hundred ontology projects around the world, and offers examples of domain ontologies that utilize BFO. The book also describes Web Ontology Language (OWL), a common framework for Semantic Web technologies. This book addresses the important, 2,000-year-old challenge of how to soundly formalize the content and organization of scientific knowledge. As a user and teacher of ontological methods in medicine and engineering I have for years warned my students that the design of domain ontologies is a black art with no theoretical foundations and few practical principles. Without progress on the problem, I argue, many fields ranging from informatics and computer science to AI and cognitive science will struggle to achieve their enormous potential, or to do so in a way that is convincing or safe. I now have a much more positive story for my students. Arp, Smith, and Spear have combined years of experience and lessons learned in diverse application domains into this treasure trove of guidance and good practice for the ontology builder. About the Author

Robert Arp is a researcher and analyst for the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, who has worked on ontologies for the U.S. Air Force and the National Institutes of Health. He is the author of Scenario Visualization: An Evolutionary Account of Creative Problem Solving. Barry Smith is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo and Director of the National Center for Ontological Research. Andrew Spear is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

A superb monograph that collects material previously available only from journal articles and expository videos. Tremendously helpful on a project of mine. I had access to a version through a university library, but I purchased the Kindle edition here because the formatting is much better for an eReader. Like other "mathy" books, there were some issues with the Kindle display of figures and tables, but this wasn't severe enough to affect my ability to understand the material. The best single reference I am aware of for anyone interested in the BFO approach to computational ontologies.

This book is now four years old, nearly five years since it was written. The major ideas in it are still up-to-date, in fact even more relevant in view of the flood of pseudo-science pushing the idea that all human behaviour originates in our genes.
Nevertheless the book is now ready for revision, and you might like to know that I'm busy revising it now. Lots of new archaeological discoveries need including, and one or two new pieces of information about languages: disappointingly few, actually, because linguists seem to have swallowed the genetic argument, or else to uncomfortably ignore it, rather than trying to take it on. The ghost of Chomsky (well it would be his ghost if he wasn't happily still alive and kicking), let's say the spirit of Chomsky still pervades Western linguistics, while Soviet linguistics has other interests.
So an up-date of this rather individual book should be welcome.

Six Reasons to Like the New Purpose-Driven Life

It has been 10 years since the publication of The Purpose-Driven LIfe, the book that topped best-seller lists for months and sold more than 32 million copies.

Rick Warren's simple formula linking each person's purpose to five classic functions of the church--worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and mission--has helped countless people re-examine their lives and deepen their faith.

When the book originally released in 2002, I was editorial director at a Christian publishing house and had previously served as a pastor for several years. As a "professional Christian," I was skeptical that Warren's seemingly simplistic approach had much to offer.

But when the church I attended did a Purpose-Driven campaign, I dutifully agreed to read a chapter a day. I was immediately hooked by Warren's unassuming voice and clear, biblical message. I read the entire book in two days and was highly motivated to re-engage in the practice of spiritual disciplines and ministry.

Since then I've used the book as the basis of a small-goup study on two occasions. This material continues to connect with basic questions people have about how to live a meaningful life.

Now Zondervan has released an anniversary edition in an attempt to reach a new generation of readers.

The expanded edition includes two additional chapters, plus online supplemental resources: a one-minute video introduction of each chapter, and a roughly 60-minute audio recording of a Sunday sermon by Warren to accompany each of the 42 chapters.

The bonus materials don't add much value to the book, however. The chapters really don't need an introduction, and I can't imagine anyone listening to 42 hour-long sermons in addition to doing a six-week group study of the book.

Purpose-Driven has been criticized by some for being too simplistic about spiritual matters and for Warren's hopscotch approach to using Scripture when supporting his points. Even so, the material is useful.

Here are six reasons I still recommend The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?

1. It makes basic Christian concepts accessible to just about everyone.

2. It's a surprisingly inspiring read.

3. It makes a good text for a new converts class.

4. It's an easy choice for a six-week small group study.

5. It is a versatile resource for one-on-one discipleship or mentoring groups.

6. Though the book has some shortcomings, they are outweighed by strengths.

No book is perfect, and Purpose-Driven is no exception. Yet for a decade it has been a value to pastors, small group leaders, and every-day Christians get in touch with God and themselves.

Very Helpful

Even though the book seems to be written from a more fundamentalist viewpoint that I happen to have, I got a lot out of reading this book and recommend it to anyone with at least Christian leanings.

Following the instructions in the book, I spent some time everyday for 40 days reading one chapter of the book and considering what it had to say until the next day. The time required was minimal, but there were many rewards/insights to be found.

The books is written around 5 purposes that can be summed up as worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and mission. As should be apparent, the importance of service is a key theme. There is no attempt to fit you into a box of a set shape; everyone being different and the desirability of that is recognized as very important.

I avoided reading this book, despite seeing it all over the place for a long time. I am glad I gave it a try. Hopefully, you will too.

Inspiring

The Purpose Driven Life is a devotional book, and with over 30 million copies sold, it's become quite popular. So what's all the fuss about? Well, the book offers readers a 40-day personal spiritual journey, and presents what the author says are God's five purposes for human life on Earth. They are:

1 You were planned for God's pleasure
2 You were formed for God's family
3 You were created to become like Christ
4 You were shaped for serving God
5 You were made for a mission

What you're suppose to do with the book is this. It's divided up into 40 brief chapters, and the reader is urged to read but one chapter a day so you can take time to think about it's implications for your life. Therefore, you really start finding yourself interacting with the book, and not just merely "reading" it. To that end, each chapter finishes with points to ponder, a verse to remember, and a question to consider.

All-in-all I found this to be a pretty thought provoking and inspiring book. The chapters are short, which I greatly appreciated due to my busy daily schedule. Additionally, I found the author's writing style easy going, which makes the book an overall enjoyable read. So if you're looking for a good book to help guide you along your spiritual journey, or a "workbook" to help you answer some of life's most important questions, I can definitely recommend you check it out. Other self-help books I liked include The Prayer Project: How Each One of Us Can Make The World a Better Place to Live - In a Few Minutes a Day.

About the Author
Mr Steve Bonsor is a general dental practitioner working in private practice in Aberdeen. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1992 with Honours and won the Hepburn Prize for the best senior student in dental hospital practice. In 1997, he gained a Diploma in Post Graduate Dental Studies from the University of Bristol. Also in that year he was appointed a part-time clinical teacher at Dundee Dental Hospital and School and Honorary Clinical Teacher at the University of Dundee in the Sections of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, Endodontology and Integrated Oral Care and taught there on a part time basis until 2006. He was admitted as a member to the Institute of Learning and Teaching in 2001 and awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2007. He completed a Master of Science at the University of Bristol graduating in 2008.

He is heavily involved in postgraduate dental education having lectured throughout the UK. He has also extensive experience of tutoring the dental team, in particular dental nurses. He has recently been appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently actively involved in research having published original research articles in peer reviewed journals with his main research areas being Photo-Activated Disinfection and the clinical performance of dental materials. He is a referee for a number of dental journals. He is a key influence of a number of dental material and equipment manufacturers.

Gavin Pearson trained as a dentist at UCL Dental School. In 1969 he was appointed as a lecturer in Conservative Dentistry at UCL Dental School and subsequently at the London Hospital Medical College Dental Institute. During this time he carried out work on the early composite filling materials. He was appointed Senior Lecturer/Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at UCL in 1979 and in 1987 he became Head of Biomaterials at Eastman Dental Institute and Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He was appointed Reader in 1990 and was awarded a personal Chair in Biomaterials in 1996. He became head of Biomaterials in relation to Dentistry at QMUL in 1999 and was also Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials at QMUL until his retirement in 2006. He has collaborated on a number of research projects with dental manufacturers.

His research has concentrated on the clinical problems associated with dental material and has been involved in the research and development of minimally invasive techniques using antibacterial PDT and glass ionomer cements. He has published over 140 peer reviewed papers. He has been associated with the University of Bristol Open Learning for Dentistry [BUOLD] courses since their inception in 1990. He has lectured in both the US and Europe and has been the UK Principle Expert on Glass Ionomer Cements at a number of ISO meetings.

In her introduction, Kathryn Moore states that her purpose for this book is to "...provide an objective account of each presidency and an appreciation of each man's character and abilities, but perhaps equally important, describe events and people shaping the lives of those who have taken the presidential oath of office." The author has presented us with a well-organized and well-written reference work on all 44 Presidents that is useful and portable.
Each section begins with a photo and a quick summary or stat sheet for that President, including Life Span, Nickname, Religion, Profession, Family, Military Service, Political Life, and details of his term(s) in office. The narrative breaks down the President's biography into titled subsections that allow one to easily look up particular facts or events. For example, President Garfield was assassinated after just a few months in office. The last part of his biography describes the shooting and Garfield's subsequent death.
At the bottom of each President's section there are two "Timelines" of "National Events" and "World Events" that provides a context for that President's term." The author also lists (in sidebars) whether new states joined the Union, how many Supreme Court Justices were appointed, the cabinet offices and officers, and "State of the Union" (population, national debt, and the president's salary). These sidebars allowed me to compare the size of George Washington's cabinet (5) with that of President Obama (14).
"Did you know?" President Eisenhower is the only president to win an Emmy award; he was given it in recognition of his use of television (421); he also had a putting green on the White House grounds (426). President John Quincy Adams owned a pet alligator that he kept in the White House (73). James K. Polk's nomination and his victory were the first to be reported by telegraph (131). James A. Garfield is the only president to be a congressman, senator-elect, and president-elect at the same time (245). Thomas Jefferson was the first president to start shaking hands as a form of greeting, replacing bowing (41). These facts and many more are presented on the outer edges of the pages. They provide interesting insights as well as quirky facts for each president's term.
Text boxes allow the reader to put an issue into context with events that have occurred in that president's term. For instance, the Louisiana Purchase was discussed in the narrative of President Jefferson's biography. The text box "Napoleon Bonaparte" explained why and how the purchase of the Louisiana came about. End notes for each bio provide a springboard for further reading or study.
Overall, Kathryn Moore has given us an excellent reference work that will find many uses by students at the high school level and above. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to look up something on a president and quickly and efficiently. It also can be updated easily for future editions.

The Ultimate Guide To The Presidents

Since 1789 forty-three men have held the office of President of the United States. Their personalities, backgrounds, and biographies vary widely between them. Each defined the role of President for himself. Some were successful while others were not. A few have ascended to greatness while others are largely forgotten by the modern American public. Four have been assassinated and four died while in office. Some have ridden through the calm waters of peace while others have steered through the turbulent seas of war. All have in some way shaped and influenced the destiny of The United States. Their stories are American stories. Their biographies are American history. To get a firm grasp on American history it is essential that you have an understanding of the lives of the men who became President.

Kathryn Moore's "The American President: A Complete History" is nothing less than the ultimate guide to the Presidents. Her 688 page tome contains complete biographies of the 43 men who have held the office of President of the United States.

Presented in chronological order from George Washington to Barack Obama; each biography is accompanied by a full page portrait on the left, while its opposing page lists the biographical facts of each President: birth and death dates and places, religion, higher education, profession, military service, family (mother, father, wife and children), political life (all political offices held), and presidency (number of terms, party, reason for leaving office & Vice President). On the following pages is a narrative biography of each President. In the margins of each president's biographical sketch are: a list of his cabinet members, presidential trivia, Supreme Court Appointments, State of the Union (population, national debt, states admitted to the Union, number of states in the Union). Colored boxes appear frequently throughout the book highlighting significant laws which were passed and events that happened during each presidency. At the bottom of each page runs a time line of American and world events which place each presidency within the context of its time. End notes are located at the end of each biographical sketch.

"The American President: A Complete History" is exhaustively researched, well written and easily read. By itself, Ms. Moore's book is a treasury of presidential information and is a must have for scholars of American history. It is a perfect companion book to the History Channel documentaries, "The Presidents," and "Ultimate Guide to the Presidents."

Love a little history and politics!

I'm a history and political nut! I've always wondered about the presidents in the past and love how their personalities made them who they are. This book was so good, I couldn't put it down!
