About the Author
Russell Kirk (1918-1994) was the author of twenty-nine books in several fields. He was the founding editor of Transaction's Library of Conservative Thought series.

A Classic

Kirk's book is the best place to begin understanding the conservative impulse in Western politics. The centrality of Christianity and of the culture that was built upon it are admirably highlighted from the later part of the 18th century through the middle part of the 20th. Kirk's knowledge of political theory during this period is breathtakingly expansive.
One can also read this volume as an erudite commentary upon the destructiveness of opposing forces, such as progressivism, utilitarianism, and scientism.
It is tragic that the current political science graduate has scarcely heard of Kirk and tends to assume the conservative movement to be a retrograde force identified primarily with Barry Goldwater.
Kirk's book is a masterpiece that belongs next to Richard Weaver's Ideas Have Consequences. Both should be staples in college and university curricula. This is probably asking too much, however, of moribund academic institutions in which only the left wing of politics is allowed a voice.
