Basic Coaching

Helen Calder's "Grow Your Prophetic and Prayer Gifts" is a helpful, though limited introduction, for those who are beginning a personal journey into the exercise of prophetic gifts. Ms. Calder develops her teaching by tracing what she calls the "six phases" of gift and ministry growth: Beginning, Desiring, Emerging, Developing, Testing and Maturing. She offers practical wisdom and insights borne of personal experience at each stage.
The book is a helpful introduction to simple growth strategies. Particularly noteworthy is Ms. Calder's practical tone and avoidance of extremes and silliness. There are no claims here that with faith and perseverance anyone can launch a world-changing international ministry. That is refreshing. Ms. Calder offers practical advice such as deepening your relationship with God and remaining accountable to leadership. Yet, one will also not find theological depth in this work. While some might desire more, the title "Grow Your ... Gifts" seems to indicate that this was not the author's purpose.
I thought the earlier portions of the book were stronger than the later. For instance, Ms. Calder observes that there is a constellation of related gifts, including intercessory gifts, words of knowledge and wisdom, and prophecy. Advice and methods for growth in these areas are related; and Helen Calder can get you started well. Her descriptions of what emerging and developing gifts look like are often insightful; my understanding of these matters was enriched by her treatment. However, the later parts of the book seemed thinner to me by comparison. While the advice remains good, interest and impact would be improved by additional stories that flesh-out the tips and coaching she offers. And I would have appreciated more depth in the description of what these gift look like--and should not look like--in practice.
Overall, this is a helpful work for those beginning down this path. Ms. Calder has real wisdom to offer, and within the scope indicated by the title, she accomplishes her purpose well. Yet, this book will leave most wanting more. As a general introduction, Steve Thompson's "You May All Prophesy" is both a broader and deeper general introduction. Jack Deere's classics, "Surprised by the Voice of God" and "Suprised by the Power of the Spirit" combine theological sensitivity with the fascinating story of his personal journey. And Wayne Grudem's "The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today" is an indispensible foundational work for those desiring a more academic perspective. Yet none of these claim to be what "Grow Your Prophetic and Prayer Gifts" truly is: a brief and practical guide for growing toward maturity and skill in revelatory gifts. If this is what you seek, Ms. Calder's book is indeed a fine place to begin.

very scriptural and focused on the present time ministry of the Holy Spirit. A must read for Pastors seeking to reach today's spiritually open but lost generation.
